Wibu to chop my hair off?

I have long, thin hair which hasn't been cut in over a year, the ends are horrible and straggly and it looks awful Sad

I haven't been able to afford to get it cut but my mum has very kindly offered to take us out and get our hair done as a treat! I was just going to get the split ends cut off and keep it long as that's what I've always done but I fancy a bit of a change. I've had a tough time over the last few months feel like it's a nice opportunity to change things up but I'm so scared!! I've always had really long hair, it's my pride and joy but it has no style and is boring.

Wibu to chop is off to something like a long bob? Will I horribly regret it?! Will it make me look older?! Help!!

My hair is currently a bit like the first pic but more thin and straggly - I'm thinking more like the second one?

Hair grows! I went for the chop a few years ago and I've never looked back!

Sharkirasharkira · 02/02/2019 11:47

I know, I'm just scared I will hate it and then I won't have any choice but to live with it Grin My hair is pretty much the only part of my body I like!

Did you do something similar? Long to short?

If you haven’t had it cut in over a year, you can probably afford to lose six inches. I wouldn’t worry about it making you look older - thin, straggly hair is more likely to do that.

Inforthelonghaul · 02/02/2019 11:52

The ends of your hair must be a good few years old so think of it as pruning for healthy growth just like you would a rose bush. I think you will love the shoulder length and feel much lighter. Go for it, it’s just hair.

CoughLaughFart · 02/02/2019 11:53

Also, the second pic is a change in length rather than style, if that makes sense. If you find it too short once done, it will grow back without any real maintenance, whereas a short or heavily layered cut would take a few tidying up trims along the way if you decided to grow it back.

CatnissEverdene · 02/02/2019 11:53

I've just had about 4 inches cut off mine, and it's literally doubled in volume. I should have done it years ago, and it's in such better condition. Do it!

themailfail · 02/02/2019 11:54

I recently went from long to short. I was also getting fed up with my hair... getting caught in car doors, tube doors, under my armpit, under someone else's armpit 🤢 I like it shorter and i can always let it grow again if I want to.

Neversurrender65 · 02/02/2019 11:58

Yes, at least have it trimmed, it does wonders for the ends condition, and does make thinner, finer hair look much better. You don’t have to go too drastic at first, but if you like what you see, consider something shorter next time. Even if you can’t afford to go to a salon, just get someone trustworthy to cut it with some decent sharp scissors. But on no account let them try layers, that needs a trained hairdresser!👍

I love long hair. I had longish hair around ten years ago, however over the years I've had trims & eventually had it cut to my shoulders a couple of years ago. I use to colour it a lot & had to get it cut, as the ends were quite dry & didn't want it looking dry. I quite like it the shorter length. I did think about growing it back longer but I actually prefer it now to my shoulders, I think it suits me better.

My cousin has quite thin hair & she likes her hair long, she grew hers quite long and bleached it, which made the condition worse & she had to have a bit cut off, but not enough, she's still sticking to trying to grow it long again but it looks so thin and scraggly down the lengths and ends that you just think what's the point of it being long, it would just look so much better having those 4, 5 inches off. So yeah I do like longer hair, but if it's not in great condition what's the point?!

Aquamarine1029 · 02/02/2019 13:08

Long hair that's in terrible condition looks awful. If anything will age you, that will. Definitely cut it.

rainflowerstar · 02/02/2019 13:10

Definitely go for it.

Sharkirasharkira · 02/02/2019 17:18

Well....I did it! It's really short to me now, just past the shoulders! Weird looking down and not seeing it there, I haven't had it this short since I was 18!

I really like it though, I actually don't miss it which I was sure I would. Normally losing a few inches feels like losing a limb but I think I was really ready for a change and wanted it gone Grin Oddly I actually think it's made me look a bit younger.

I had a fair bit chopped off and a different colour a few weeks ago! Didn't look back and love it! If you can brave it do it, you'll feel much better about yourself.. Hair only grows back! (you may even regret not doing it in the end!)

Sorry OP didn't realise you'd commented again! Glad you like your new style :)

Thehop · 02/02/2019 17:38

I think mid length healthy hair on my makes me look and feel much younger than my long thin dry hair did.

foxtiger · 03/02/2019 13:42

I was going to say that you didn't like it as it was before, so you had nothing to lose by having it cut. I'm glad you went ahead with it.

MuddyMoose · 03/02/2019 13:46

I went for a drastic chop last year. I went from hair I could sit on to hair just below my shoulders. Never have regretted it. It's in much better condition now & has already grown to part way down my back. I donated what I had cut off.

Louiselouie0890 · 03/02/2019 13:57

Just go in between. A good chunk of so you feel fresh and a new style but no so dramatic incase you hate it.
