to vent about feeling conned by Currys?

Just bought a new laptop from a Curry's in the North East of England. I had reserved the laptop online, but went to have a look at them and then went to pick mine up. The seller, (side note- a man whom I didn't warm to) apologised, saying that there was only one left (the one which I had reserved) but it had already been set up, therefore I was required to pay a service fee of £20 (he said that he was reducing this from £60) for a service I didn't want and didn't ask for. Firstly - it can't have been the only laptop left, because according to the online catalogue, there are still some left in that store. Then, I had a quick google - this has happened at other places throughout the country, with another man saying that the service was supposed to cost him £35 but the seller had reduced it to £10 because he hadn't asked for it. I feel ripped off, and the fact that big corporate companies have the gall to do this repeatedly doesn't make me feel any better. Grumble!

Has anyone else had something like this happen to them?

Set up fees are a con. We got refunded when we received an email saying that we were entitled to our money back. This was from the place we bought it. Apparently loads of people got refunded

Screaming I didn't think of that I should have done, was the first time we had bought a car from a showroom and they definitely lived up to their reputation! I think they just do it hoping you don't notice and sign like we did so they get their commission and for those that do notice they probably just write it off as goodwill. Wankers

Complain. A couple of years ago my son went to Currys to buy an Apple MacBook that he had saved up for himself from a Saturday job. He was told the only one left was display model but power cable was missing. They could order one but only if he paid for the item in full - which he would not be able to use until power cable arrived! We declined and drove to a neighbouring town and bought a brand new boxed one from PC World who price matched Currys offer. I wrote and complained to Currys and we received an apology and also a £30 gift card.

If you want to be invisible at Currys, take a man with you. My DP hates tech stuff but he always gets asked about what he wants to buy and I'm completely ignored.

One time, I went in to Currys to buy a tablet. In had a specific question about the storage on the model. One salesman comes over and asks if I need help. Another then comes over. Ignores me. Asks the person next to me "what does she want", salesperson answers "she wants to know if it comes in pink". I was so angry and just walked out.

CurrysPCWorld sell your personal details to a third party. We used to buy our electrical items from them and they would ask for a phone number so we'd give them the landline number. Without fail, within the week we'd be plagued with spam calls. It even got to the point where we'd be able to predict it happening if we bought something from there.

I ended up complaining to the information commissioner place and the calls stopped. I now buy the electrical items online or from argos if I can.

Currys are absolutely shit. DH offered to buy me a new laptop at Xmas as my old one was giving up.
We went to Currys and the salesman completely ignored me and only spoke to DH. DH isn't the slightest bit tech knowledgeable. At the end of the pitch (which included loads of add one) I turned to DH and said "Let's go and get it in Harvey Norman so".
Never seen a salesman silenced so quickly, plus it was £50 cheaper in HN. Win win!

I bought a laptop from Curry's for DS1 to go to Uni at the end of last summer. Saw one left in their sale section with a reasonable spec for the price so asked to buy it. I was then told that I needed to pay another £60 above the ticket price because they had taken a backup onto a stick and included it. I told them to take it the stick out of the box and sell me the machine at the advertised price. After a bit of debate they agreed.
They are just dreadful cowboys.

MiniMum97 · 02/02/2019 17:34

I can't believe you paid it or asked him to reduce it. I would have just dug my heels in and said I hadn't asked them to do that so they couldn't charge me. Yes it sounds like a con and I would be complaining to head office and trading standards. Disgusting practice.

I was ignored in Curry's too.
We got an insurance payout for the kids iPad and it was curry's vouchers 😩. I couldn't get anyone to speak to me (I was scruffy that day thanks to decorating). When we did get someone they ignored me and spoke to tech clueless DH. I almost wanted to snap my fingers in the salesman's face to get him to look at me!

Years earlier as a young couple we went to buy our first flatscreen tv (back when they cost big money). It was a whopping £800 and we didn't have a penny more. The saleswoman rung up a surge protector extension cable with it for an extra £70 without asking and a £90 extended warranty. We stopped her and said we didn't want either and she pretty much refused to let us have the tv unless we bought them. We got a huge lecture on surge protectors being absolutely necessary to run a television. The UK has a very, very reliable electricity supply and lightening strikes on houses are rare as Fuck so no, they're not needed. Especially as you can pick one up for less than a tenner anyway. And the extended warranty was for two years so just £45 a year. I called her out on it telling her it came with a year warranty as standard making the extended bit a massive £90 not to mention the fact that we have the sales of goods act giving me up to 6 years.

Currys are bastards over here (Ireland) as well. Tried to charge me €20 for delivery on a freezer when there were banners hanging all over the white appliances section saying 'free delivery on all large appliances, including weekends'. The little bollocks tried to say it didn't apply to everything so I said I'd leave it and get one from Amazon. Like another poster on here, he was suddenly able to allow free delivery.

Had problems with several things from Currys now. I don't have the energy to type out the miserable sagas but have learned my lesson. I LOOK at things in Currys then see what Harvey Norman will do about price matching (they always do if they stock the product).

There’s something very wrong with Curry’s customer service wise atm. Myself and DD recently went in to buy a TV, a freezer and a toaster. We’d already done the research, knew the model numbers etc, and waited to get help. Eventually someone was appointed to us...and. my god he was so rude. I thought I was making life easy for him, as in no need to go literally from one side of the store (TV) to the other (freezer) and toaster in the middle as we already had the details. For some reason he took against us and became really brusque - even, when I asked him to repeat something, (just the once) in enunciating each word as if speaking to a simpleton.
Anyway, we were pleased to leave. Not a pleasurable experience, and DD has written to customer services.

I have heard other such reports recently about them.
