Hot Food Flask

Itreallyistimetochangethings · 02/02/2019 07:10

To ask you to recommend your tried and tested HOT food flasks. Food like - pasta, soup, stew, etc needs to be kept warm for at least 5 hours. All the ones I've seen are stainless steel inside. is it possible to buy - plastic and steel keep it hot for that long? Tried and tested please. Thanks

Never used one myself but thinking of buying one.

PotteringAlong · 02/02/2019 07:59

I’ve got a thermos food flask. Amazing!

showmeshoyu · 02/02/2019 08:01

Out of curiosity... what's wrong with stainless steel?

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 02/02/2019 08:04

Ability to keep food warm also depends on the type of food - more watery stuff stays hotter for longer than things like pasta. I use Zojirushi food flasks but they are difficult to get in the UK - Tiger is another good brand.

No idea about plastic lined ones.

JenniferJareau · 02/02/2019 08:04

I would recommend the one I use but it is steel.

Babbaganoush · 02/02/2019 08:04

I'd also recommend the Thermos Food Flask. However it is stainless steel inside. Not sure plastic would have the same insulation to be honest. This easily kept my lunch warm for 5 hours+ and I used to put all sorts in in, soup, curry, stew etc. It comes within a folding spoon in the lid too.

I have a plastic Stanley one I got in Aldi about 10 years ago! My colleague uses an Alladin Bento Box, which is big enough for a jacket potato.

Amazon sell them nowadays. They even do a kind of multiple section tiffin style food storage flask.

MadauntofA · 02/02/2019 08:13

You need to pour boiling water in them and leave for 10mins with the lid on, pour out and then fill with piping hot food - my soup was hot for 8hrs in my thermos when I didn't have time to eat last time

Designerenvy · 02/02/2019 08:18

Chilli flasks are supposed to be great for keeping things hot and cold for hours. I don't personally have one bit girls at work swear by them .
They're expensive and can only be bought online I think, but apparently worth it.

WoogleCone · 02/02/2019 08:23

Another vote for thermos! Me and DH have one and it keeps beans, soup, porridge hot for hours and hours!

monkeywrench · 02/02/2019 08:26

I bought this one for my daughter, it got good reviews and she loves it. I fill it with boiling water when I make my cup of tea in the morning and then heat the dinner on the stove, empty the water out and fill it up. She says it is the perfect temperature to eat when she has her lunch. And, in fact, when I early her leftovers a couple of hours later, they are still a bit warm even though she has had it open half an hour or so.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/02/2019 08:27

I live my little fat thermos. They are usually about £20 but are often on sale for £13.33 in my local Sainsbury’s. I’ve seen them in TK Maxz too. Absolutely brilliant! I burned my tongue on my lunch once on something I had microwaved in the morning (so it deffo keeps its heat).

The only think I dont like the the metal spoon (horrible scrappy noises when you eat).

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/02/2019 08:28

I’m sure I also saw some at Costco.

Thanks everyone I've got some great ideas to google now.
It is for ds school lunches - moving to pack lunch and id like him to have hot food at lunchtime
Thanks

The thermos flask is really good and keeps food warm till lunchtime. The only problem is It's really hard for ds to open as it sort of seals shut. Even I find it difficult to twist it open sometimes. Does anyone have a solution to this? Or can anyone recommend a flask that is easier for kids to open?

Sorry to hijack your thread op. Xx

MadauntofA · 02/02/2019 10:31

I have the children's thermos, and my dc haven't found it a problem to open. Looks small but enough (unless your dc are strapping 16yr olds who eat adult portions!!)

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 02/02/2019 10:34

I have the plastic thermos. It’s got a glass outer around the plastic. It has a separate cup that sits inside too - ideal for a jkt pot and beans.

Works well with mixed up spag Bol too.

JenniferJareau · 02/02/2019 11:09

Does anyone have a solution to this?

I tend to use a tissue or towel to help open it, helps with the grip. My hand won't open it by itself often.

justforareply · 02/02/2019 11:13

This is great
I hear it with boiling water before putting in food
I fill it up as food retains heat better than air
I looked at all the others available and this seemed to have longest time for keeping warm
DD has complained the food too hot if she eats it at 11 from being out in at 715

Hot Food Flask
Itreallyistimetochangethings · 02/02/2019 11:32

That's fine floral not a hijack at all- any experience and advice appreciated. I'm trying to make a durable and worthwhile choice (at minimum cost) without the expense of having to replace it a few weeks later for reasons as you mention.

Toastedstrudel · 02/02/2019 11:38

Just a word of warning- some schools will not allow any ‘hot’ food, even if it’s in. Thermos and not actually that hot!

itreallyistimetochangethings · 02/02/2019 11:39

Nearlyschool - could you send a link to yours please ?

Madaunt - I liked this but would need slightly bigger - - I am looking at 4-500 ml.

Thanks

Toasted - I didn't know that - I will have to find out. This is primary school - Thanks
