Removal of implant

Hello, posting here for traffic mainly.
I would like to know how implant removal went for other women to get an idea if my experience was normal or if I'm being a big baby.
I'm not one to complain but wondering if I should because not only was I messed about but I was in tears during the procedure due to the pain and they just got on with it. Due to comments made before I felt this was because they were in a rush and tbh didn't really give a shit despite me saying I'm feeling everything and it hurts.

Guess my main question is how much pain is normal to feel during the removal?

Well I don't even have the new one in since the pharmacy was out of stock. So will have to get it done somewhere else. She said to make an appt with her to get the pill or the coil, but despite all this I still want the implant as it was great for me while it was in.

Should I complain about them being in a rush(overheard GP moaning at the receptionist about the appt and why am I in, and the nurse moaned the doctor wasn't in yet because she had to leave at 11) which possibly caused me being in pain or would I look ridiculous?

I never bothered to get mine taken out. Been in about 5 years. I wonder if that's an issue or if I can quietly forget about it and leave it in forever? (Replacement not needed.)

Rtmhwales · 01/02/2019 19:52

I've had both. First was quite painful because they had to dig it out. When the anesthetic wore off later I was rocking back and forth on the floor as my arm was throbbing horrifically. Second time, didn't even notice it and no throbbing later.

BertyFlanter · 01/02/2019 21:27

@DarklyDreamingDexter When they were struggling with my DDs they told her that if they didn't get it out soon (after 15 mins of digging!) they would just leave it in. So I'm guessing that it shouldn't be a problem.

CreakyBlinder · 01/02/2019 21:35

Me too @DarklyDreamingDexter I just forget about it. Then when I remember I go into a sort of denial. I think it should have come out in 2016 Shock

Fuck. I really should deal with it.

100Birds · 01/02/2019 21:42

Mine was that weird itchy pressure feeling like when you have a tooth out, because it was numbed. If it hurt like a sharp pain then something seems wrong!

TheOnlyTruePirate · 01/02/2019 21:52

I had an implanon pre-kids, removed maybe 9 years ago... it certainly involved rather a lot of wrestling and pain to remove!

Similar to a poster above I seem to be quite resistant to the effects of local anaesthetic and usually need a lot for it to be effective. I have been told by a medic that this is not uncommon in people with ginger hair (I am a redhead) and there is indeed information available online supporting this if you have a quick google.

True to form after two or three attempts to inject more anaesthetic I could still feel all attempts to cut my arm. The nurse removing the implant told me I couldn't have any more and she would just need to get on with it. I felt everything, and although the anaesthetic I had had did at least take the edge off I can only describe it as very stingy! I was holding back tears as I tried to keep still but remember the nurse being very unsympathetic and telling me that childbirth would be far worse Grin Can't really argue with that but at least during childbirth adrenaline etc. take the edge off.

All in all it was most unpleasant but I have no idea what the alternative was as I wanted the thing out... I've never had another one since and am happy with my copper coil now!

DarklyDreamingDexter · 01/02/2019 23:44

Thanks, @BertyFlanter, from what your DD was told it should be ok. Maybe we can just go on ignoring it @CreakyBlinder ? Smile

keepingbees · 02/02/2019 13:24

I would raise a complaint. I would've thought if you were in so much pain they could've topped up the anaesthetic.

Also, it sounds like your surgery operates the same way as mine, whereby you have to have an appointment before a new implant and they give you a prescription to pick it up from the pharmacy first. I was told if I didn't bring the implant it wouldn't be happening. Were you not given a prescription for it first?
Also I'm confused how a doctor forgot about your appointment if you were booked in?
It sounds like a catalogue of errors to be honest and I wouldn't be happy

I felt pain! I don’t think I should have. I have a high pain threshold too and it bloody hurt and the nurse wasn’t the most sympathetic!

thewreckofthehesperus · 01/04/2019 19:37

I'm on my fourth and beyond the initial sting of the injection for local anaesthetic I've never felt any pain. I could feel movement alright but no pain.

EstrellaDamn · 01/04/2019 20:53

WTF @Anuta77 ??

Excited101 · 01/04/2019 20:57

The first time I had mine taken out, she injected the anaesthetic and then immediately cut into my arm. I swore loudly at her, I felt all of that bit (hardly a surprise) and then it seemed to calm down. It was a fight for her to get it out though and took a really long time. She even stopped halfway to have a chat with a colleague who came to the door. I have never had an experience as bad as that and I refuse to go there again. The next time it was absolutely fine.

Bambamber · 01/04/2019 20:58

@Anuta77 are you a bit dense? How does birth control relate to self esteem?

Excited101 · 01/04/2019 20:58

Wtf Anuta?! You know what a contraceptive implant is, right?!

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 01/04/2019 21:03

It's ok... Anuta didn't like my opinion on one of her threads so she sent me a sweary PM and I guess is now stalking my other threads to find something to have a go at.

Update: got over it, finally found the implant at the pharmacy so had it put in with the GP. A double booking this time and pain free. At least I'm sorted now for the next 3 years.

I didnt feel mine at all. She numbed the area with a needle but didn't feel the removal.

ImNotTheDramaLlamaHere · 01/04/2019 21:07

Oops, didn't realise it was old! 🙈
@Anuta77 really... 🤦🏼‍♀️

Carpetburns · 01/04/2019 21:13

Mine had grown into the tissue and took the GP about 40minutes (and lots of blood) to dig it out!

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 01/04/2019 21:17

Bloody hell carpet should consider myself lucky then. Thanks

OP posts:
EerieSilence · 01/04/2019 21:25

Mine have always become totally imbedded and were very difficult to remove. All GPs were surprised as they've never seen anything like this before. Last time it took the GP 30 minutes of digging and tugging to get it out and it bloody hurt despite the local anaesthesia. I know it's me and not them as it were 4 different GPs by now.

auntykara · 01/04/2019 22:44

I had a tricky insertion and was pretty much having an anxiety attack after being treated like a complete idiot for the reason I needed it (missed the window to get morning after pill)

I felt it being put in too, and she'd inject a little more and roll her eyes and wait for what felt like 2 secs before trying again. Horrible bruising later. Ugh.

But 3 years later, same clinic but different person, the removal went so smoothly, I didn't feel it coming out. All of that panic was for nothing!

@Anutta77 contraceptive implant, not cosmetic implants.
