About fruit at school

It's a bit trivial but posting here for traffic and to find out what other people do.

I know in reception fruit is provided for free. But at ds' school they ask us to pack one piece of fruit for snack. We're doing that and think it's fine but the other day, after school club lady said to us not to bring the fruit as DS doesn't eat it. He does eat the free fruit and then at the club they have fruit again at snack time.

So I ask class TA what the policy is and she was a bit huffy and said yes of course keep bringing it! It's not a problem to pack it but does seem pointless to have fruit knocking about in his bag just to then bring it back again! By then our fruit isn't that appetising.

So anybody who works at the school can shed some light on this? Is this common at other schools? Are they saving the fruit for people who can't afford to bring fruit? My DS says he eats the free fruit so I know it is held back from them.

It’s always cheap, manky fruit as well. My DC get old carrots, tomatoes and then some more carrots and some more tomatoes. No variety, no NICE fruit like mango or raspberries. And we have a generation of children who grow up thinking they hate fruit...

That should say *anybody work at A school shed some light..

I'm a bit unclear, does the fruit you send in come back in his bag? Is that how after school club know he doesn't eat it?

If you know tgey get free fruit I wouldn't bother sending more in...maybe he's a bit fruited out.

crispsmonster · 01/02/2019 15:18

Yes the fruit we send in comes back. So after school club lady can see he hasn't eaten it. At his school they have lovely fruit apparently. Pears and mangoes were available.

So I am thinking I won't bother sending one in with him. But TA said we need to! I don't want to be that parent who didn't bother but I just don't get why?

Could you leave a packet of raisins in his bag? Wouldn’t get wrecked and could just stay in there unless he’s hungry? Daft to send in food you know won’t be eaten but will be spoilt by the time it gets home.

Invest in one of these and just pop a piece in everyday? GrinNo wastage and everyone is happy and your DH is still eating the school fruit. I seriously considered this after so many shrivelled apples and bruised bananas!

I work at a school and kids get fruit/veg every day. Tends to be bananas, pears, apples, carrots or tomatoes. We don't ask kids to bring anymore so don't know why yours ask this. Maybe pop in and ask the office.

Expecting school to provide mangos or raspberries for 100s of pupils seems a bit unrealistic as nice as it would be. It would be so expensive.

bridgetreilly · 01/02/2019 16:01

Tropical fruit is not only very expensive, it's also very sugary. It would be ludicrous to expect schools to provide mangoes.

OP, I agree, it's ridiculous to expect you to keep sending fruit that he doesn't eat because he's eating the fruit that's there. I'd stop wasting your time and money on it.
