AIBU asking about self assessment online filing?

Super123 · 31/01/2019 22:36

My DH's online self assessment needs to be filed by 11.59 pm.
It's normally a very quick process, but this year he needs to add a tax free private pension withdrawal and can't fathom where to include it.
When he clicks on UK pension, the only options are taxable pensions.
Any ideas would be gratefully received!

Are the helpline still open? They're usually quite good at answering questions.

Hoopaloop · 31/01/2019 22:40

Talk about cutting it fine Grin

Anonymumtum · 31/01/2019 22:41

What is it exactly and how much was it?

slimthinpin · 31/01/2019 22:42

if the worst comes to the worst why not submit it tonight without that then phone early tomorrow and tell them you just realised you made a mistake? I am sure they would understand.

Super123 · 31/01/2019 22:42

Thanks for that, we'll give them a call now. I didn't think they'd still be open.

or you could write in the "other notes" box at the end that you couldn't work it out and will contact them ASAP to amend.

KittiKat · 31/01/2019 22:43

You do not need to include it. It is not taxable therefore it does not need to be included in his self assessment.

Anonymumtum · 31/01/2019 22:44

I am a member of the CIOT, I will be more use than HMRC... Try me..!

bridgetreilly · 31/01/2019 22:47

I agree with pp. I don't think you need to declare non-taxable income. Like if you won the lottery. You don't pay tax on that money, so you don't need to put it on the form.

Streamside · 31/01/2019 22:51

I think the advice to get it done and put some notes highlighting the problems you had is the way to go. I completed mine at 2.00am today his morning and what a relief.Remember you also need to make the payment.

Super123 · 31/01/2019 22:56

Anonymumtum, it's a modest withdrawal from a private pension that is well within the 25% tax free allowed. He thought he should include this information.

Thanks everyone else for the suggestions.
DH thinks Mumsnet is great!

I believe it depends on the type of withdrawal. Was it a tax free lump sum or a pension income? Did he get a p60 or similar for the withdrawal?

If in doubt add a note, submit it anyway so it's done and then speak to them tomorrow and file a corrected account online if needed.

Anonymumtum · 31/01/2019 23:01

Like any good tax question the answer is it depends. But if the IFA was clear it was tax free and the paperwork backs that up there is no need to put it on. You can pop it in the additional info box if you like, but they don’t actually read them (I know, but it’s true!)

Anonymumtum · 31/01/2019 23:02

If it was taxable to any degree then tax would have been deducted at source and there should be some sort of tax deduction certificate provided

Anonymumtum · 31/01/2019 23:03

...and therefore should go on, (that last post should have finished)

AlexaShutUp · 31/01/2019 23:04

Not sure about the helpline but looks like they still have web chat advisers available if you still need help, OP.

MrDarcyWillBeMine · 31/01/2019 23:09

OMG I am on the verge of crying with this year’s self assessment!

For the past two weeks I have been passed from pillar to post and sent around in a circle. I’ve sat in front of a HMRC webpage clearly telling me to call them to resolve an issue- called them to be told ‘we don’t do that email X’ - then received an email back to say ‘we don’t do that call the helpline’!!!

😡😡😡😭

Basically my account has locked me out and I changed mobile numbers since last year. Despite being told twice now that they’ve reset my account - every time I log in it demands an access code I simply don’t have!

I’m terrified I’ll get fined (I don’t even owe tax as I’m a student and didn’t earn anywhere near enough last year)

Can’t even sleep I’m so stressed

Menstruator · 31/01/2019 23:11

I got into mine through the post office verification this year after log in issues

MrDarcyWillBeMine · 31/01/2019 23:15

Mine doesn’t offer any options to get around it- only to reset my password - which I have done twice

But still asks for the texted access code every time

Super123 · 31/01/2019 23:25

Thanks very much everyone.

MrDarcyWillBeMine, the access code is sent via a text message. Have they got your current number?

Yaayyyyy, the Web chat helpline is still open! Thanks Alexa.

I agree with Anonymumtum's summary. Experienced professional here too.

MrDarcyWillBeMine · 01/02/2019 07:56

No I don’t- this is the problem

For two weeks I’ve been trying to change it and no one can agree on who should change it! Keep getting passed between the same departments!

I haven’t submitted- there was no way I could - I’m locked out of my account
