To ask WTH I should wear to this interview?

I’m currently a stay at home Mum that hasn’t worked for over 6 years. I have an interview next week as a dinner lady at a very nice school in our town. The thing is my previous jobs were quite high level, but ended up not giving us any work/life balance as a family which was why I left. Straight from uni I have only ever had interviews for well paid jobs where a full suit/suit dress and jacket were expected. I no longer have any of those clothes and have absolutely no idea what I should wear. I’m super nervous as it’s been so long since I last had a job.

Any advice would be appreciated! It’s a catholic school and I’m quite a pudgy (and very busty) lady!

I'd go for a floral dress with tights, a blazer and ballet flats?

John4703 · 31/01/2019 21:06

I would never offer dress advice to a lady but if you are signing on as unemployed you might be able to get some help towards the cost of clothes for an interview. I know how difficult it can be to afford new smart stuff. It would be worth asking at the Job Centre.

Twizzleegg · 31/01/2019 21:09

As long as you look clean and reasonably smart, you can wear anything. Even a nice pair of jeans is acceptable these days, but not with holes even if if is fashionable. I wouldn't wear trainers.

Anyway Good luck with the interview.

Smart casual is fine. Sainsbury’s has some nice things that aren’t expensive.

PurpleDaisies · 31/01/2019 21:13

Forgot to say, really good luck.

John4703 I’m not signing on or receiving any benefits as I voluntarily left my last job and have only just started looking for a new one. I’m also only looking for a few hours a week so I wouldn’t be eligible for any help (the interview is for a job that is 8hrs a week). Thanks though x

I would wear a plain dress or top and skirt with tights and smart shoes (flats or heels) with a smart cardigan or blazer and subtle jewellery.

pinkcardi · 31/01/2019 21:15

If it's a smart school, and to be honest, even if it wasn't, I would go fairly smart but practical. Smart is always good for interviews, shows that you care enough to make the effort.

So the dress, tights, ballet flats and blazer suggestion is good.

Or, plain trousers (personally not jeans) and smart top, cardi or shirt.

As long as people notice you, and not the clothes, you'll be fine. Good luck

JasperKarat · 31/01/2019 21:19

@yips that is basically my self imposed work uniform. . .

John4703 · 31/01/2019 21:27

Good luck and enjoy your new job

Irunforcakeandfizz · 31/01/2019 21:30

Another recent new starter Dinner Lady here. I wore a floral dress, black tights and a pair of boots to my interview. Good Luck.

IchWill · 31/01/2019 21:31

Dress smart but comfortable. You'll feel confident, but not overdressed or stuffy.

A blazer, plain top and black trousers / black jeggings, with a nice scarf or jewellery means you look smart, but not like you've turned up to wrong interview.

When I changed careers from IT to Marketing, PR and Communications I got the interview dress completely wrong. Suits were acceptable for IT interviews, but not for the new career. Statement jewellery, smart casual blazers and bright colours were more acceptable / expected. I learned quickly.

Good luck. Smash it.

SauvignonBlanketyBlank out of interest what do you wear for work? I’d be in the dinner hall and out supervising play time if I get the position
