To be disappointed that my children’s teachers have not come into school?

My teenagers are at secondary school in crucial years. They have said that the last 2days many teachers have not come in due to snow and the supply teachers have not been very effective. The snow fall here and within a 60mile radius (relatives and friends all over) has been close to non existent. What example does this send to our children? Snowflakes? 🤪

Why do so many teachers choose to live so far from where they work? Commuting is hellish and bad for the environment. I would have thought that one of the few perks of being a teacher is the fact that there are jobs everywhere. Surely it's better to work just a few miles from where you live.

Why do so many teachers choose to live so far from where they work?

It is not that inconceivable to imagine that a teacher does not want to live anywhere near the families that they teach, is it?

ScafellPoke · 31/01/2019 20:47

How much does that surgeon get paid mytye?

The reason i mentioned the boiler is because they tend to break more when they are under stress from cold weather, it has to be cold to snow

Ghanagirl · 31/01/2019 20:50

@Believeitornot
So do you think health care professionals want to live near their patients?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 31/01/2019 20:54

No I get you wouldn't want to live next door to kids you teach. But catchment areas aren't that massive. I can't think why anyone would need to comute 25 miles.

Tjzmummabear · 31/01/2019 20:54

I genuinely think you need to give your head a wobble.

Tjzmummabear · 31/01/2019 20:54

Commute

Ffs..teachers are now responsible for global warming and should have to explain to the tax payer why they choose to commute. Jesus fucking wept.

MissMarplesKnitting · 31/01/2019 20:55

Dear god, I'd never live near school now

Especially now with gossipy OP casting aspersions on my every move.

Every pub trip noted. Contents of supermarket trolley.....it's bad.

I used to live near my school and I couldn't go shopping without constantly seeing kids. Not so bad with littlies but less fun with hulking teens making comments as you come out of bravissimo.

Bumblebeeeee · 31/01/2019 20:58

is OP a troll? seems like a post intended to cite irritation/comments

CheesecakeAddict · 31/01/2019 20:59

I have already received an email from dd's nursery saying they will be closed tomorrow if there is snow. I have back to back year 11 tomorrow and there is nothing I can do. Teachers also have lives too and you can't be annoyed about that.

Holidayshopping · 31/01/2019 20:59

Why do so many teachers choose to live so far from where they work?

Because I can’t afford to live anywhere near my school!!

How do you think schools in very wealthy areas will recruit teachers (in the midst of a massive recruitment and retention crisis) who live ‘nice and close’ in case it snows!?

I can’t believe some posts!

alig99 · 31/01/2019 21:00

I think the school should pay every parent £50 for every day the school is closed. It’s only fair considering parents get fined for everyday a child is taken out of school.

Believeitornot · 31/01/2019 21:01

?

Sorry I don’t understand why you’ve jumped to that question from my post. I’ve said nothing about healthcare providers.

EyesUnderARock · 31/01/2019 21:01

Why commute?
You don’t bump into children and parents checking out your trolley in the supermarket, judging you in the pub or club, watching you managing your own family.
You can live in a cheaper area and work in a posh one, or vice versa.
You work in the city but love the country, or vice versa.
Good schools are worth commuting to.

Um, I think you are overreacting there a little. It was a genuine question. My best mate is a teacher and walks to school which strikes me as fairly idyllic. I wondered why more people didn't do the same.

Some of you are coming across a tad unhinged and paranoid. And did you really correct my spelling Tjz? Get over yourself. I'm not one of your students.

ScafellPoke · 31/01/2019 21:01

Where should they get the money from alig we can’t even get printer credit Hmm

Mixedbags · 31/01/2019 21:03

I am actually astonished at the viscious and bullying type nature of some of the replies on here (I hope these people don’t teach my kids). I merely said I was disappointed if some of the teachers who could have made it safely to work had not gone in.

I teach A level and BTEC to 16 - 18 year olds. I commute 33 miles each way to the college I teach in, today I left at lunch to get home safely and tomorrow I won't be attempting the journey if it is dangerous. I will email my students work to complete at home however. Ultimately its not worth the risk if there is lots of ice and snow and I'm sure students can carry on with revision or prep on the meantime

Holidayshopping · 31/01/2019 21:04

Hmm
EyesUnderARock · 31/01/2019 21:05

Hard to socialise if friends are parents at your school, you’re usually banned from having them on Facebook for example.

Ontonumber2 · 31/01/2019 21:09

If the senior staff feel the teachers circumstances warrant a day off then I think you can trust them. If they are just being 'snowflakes' then they will be facing disciplinary action and that along with pressure for results, time spent providing and following up cover work and the stress of completing course content before the exams would put even the laziest of teachers off having a day off for the sake of it.

PurpleDaisies · 31/01/2019 21:09

Living in catchment and teaching the kids that live next door is worse.
