Hi, posting for traffic.
My 6yo dd seems to have developed a small vocal tic. When watching a screen or TV making a regular small 'hmm' sound. Started last week and seems to be persisting. Research (Google) seems to indicate that not drawing attention to it is the best thing and it will probably go of its own accord. Does that tally with others' experience? She has absolutely no other unusual developments, no problems with concentrating or anything. Should I ask the teacher to check out for it at school or is there no real point?

I was going to post a similar thread, and my 7 year old has developed the same kind of vocal tic. When he's tired especially, he hmms a lot.

This isn't the first tic he's had though, he used to bite his lower lip (below the lip) when he was around 4ish, and last year developed a blinking tic when he'd scrunch his eyes tight. After realising his eyes weren't sore, we decided it was a tic and would go away on its own.

He is showing increasing signs of anxiety though which I think tallies with the tics developing and obviously I'm more concerned about the anxiety than the tics.

I do recall having them when I was young though, and I also had bouts of separation anxiety and general anxiety which I have since grown out of. I'm hoping if we deal with the anxiety then the tics will fade away as he grows.

The best thing to do is ignore it unless it is disruptive to his classmates. I've only noticed that DS1 does it in the evenings when tired.

My DS has had these since he was little. They vary, one fades and he will develop a new one. I'm not too worried about it.

Yes, her dad remembers having something similar as a child and apparently it can be genetic so will see. She's not anxious as far as I know but I think I'll make an extra effort to see she is getting enough sleep to see if that helps

Google Transient tic disorder it’s very common. You may need to tell the teachers about it - my son had various tics including a whistling tic which nearly drove me to distraction and the teachers needed to understand he couldn’t control it otherwise he would have got into trouble whistling at the headmaster in assembly ... he has mostly stopped ticing now (he is 10). Of course it could turn into something more significant but very unlikely.

My son currently has two tics, the eye scrunching one and a weird breathing one we sounded like he was gasping for breath until I realised his chest was clear etc and he wasn't doing it while asleep!
I'm due to go to the doctors soon with it as he also has anxiety, it seems to get worse when something is happening like nativity or a change but they do generally go away xx
