AIBU to think Training in this weather isn't a good idea?!

Prepared to be told AIBU and to suck it up - however.....

I'm in the South of England. It's freezing (currently -1). Last night older daughter had netball training outside. It was -2 at the time. The court was very very slippery, to the point where the girls were told not to run or jump?!

Tonight, younger daughter has football training. It's outside on a 3G pitch - 6.30 - 7.30pm. Snow is forecast for between 6-7pm.

AIBU to think that due to the extreme weather, perhaps training isn't particularly a great idea? My girls are very sporty. they play and train several times a week - they never miss training, but surely this is a little bit silly?!

Maybe I just need to get my big girl pants on, wrap up warm, and take a hot water bottle!!

I'm in Scotland, my kids do athletics in all weather. Grips on their shoes, balaclava on their heads and thermal under leggings and tops underneath their gear. Then get on with it.

TheClaifeCrier · 31/01/2019 15:38

I'm in Cumbria and have been running all week in below freezing temperatures. It's fine as long as you keep moving.

4TeensAndABaby · 31/01/2019 15:41

I totally need to suck it up and wrap up warm don't I?!

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 31/01/2019 15:42

I'm in Canada and having a proper giggle at 'extreme weather'. Sorry.

4TeensAndABaby · 31/01/2019 15:45

@ShakeYourTailFeathers Oh I can absolutely believe that! We're just not equipped for it here!

it's not extreme weather, it's winter. Completely fine with the appropriate equipment, my boys do rugby and football outdoors all winter long.

A very slippery court is not right though, it's dangerous, so that's not on.

Do you really have to stay around? It's a bit chilly if you are just standing up for an hour - layers and layers are your friends.

4TeensAndABaby · 31/01/2019 15:52

@CallMeVito You're right. By the time I get there, there's absolutely no point going home again, so I have to stay there unfortunately.
Totally agree that Netball was very dangerous, and definitely shouldn't have been played on that surface. Think I'm just hoping to stay indoors in the warm!

Your DD shouldn't be playing on a slippery court, recipe for disaster. I understand the need to keep up with sports during all weathers but where courts/pitches are hazardous with potential ice it's too dangerous.
I play hockey on astroturf & our training has been cancelled tonight as the pitches are simply not playable plus I fall over quite easily when there's no ice!!

Witchend · 31/01/2019 15:52

I've swept the snow off the court to play tennis.

Actually once you are out there and playing, you warm up and it's a lovely feeling when you're playing so hard that even the ends of your fingers are glowing warm in such temperatures.
I'd rather play in (UK) extreme cold than (UK) hot.

ErictheGuineaPig · 31/01/2019 15:52

They shouldn't cancel training but they should absolutely have sorted out the netball court. I know we're not equipped for extreme weather but frost and a temp of around freezing isn't that unusual for the UK.

McPie · 31/01/2019 15:56

I ran this morning and it was -7 and I was fine, as long as she is wearing a couple of extra layers and keeps moving she will be fine.

arethereanyleftatall · 31/01/2019 16:00

Well, by still running the session, you get to choose whether you go or don't. Don't go if you don't want to. There would be more complaints if it was cancelled.

WomanWithAltitude · 31/01/2019 16:06

No problem with being outside training in this weather. I'm up north, and have been running in it, it's fine.

I don't understand why they didn't grit the netball court though... That's just silly.

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 31/01/2019 16:23

Sorry, OP. I'm a mother of a netball player as well. Fleecy blankets are your friend (and if they're big enough, the other parents love you too!)

4TeensAndABaby · 31/01/2019 16:39

@RedHatsDoNotSuitMe I have one of those, and a hot water bottle which regularly accompanies me. Unfortunately I was asked to umpire, so was unable to wear my 'Jedi' blanket on the sidlelines!

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 31/01/2019 16:43

At least if you're umpiring then you're moving all the time which helps.

Just have something hot and yummy when you get home. Or alcoholic and yummy!
Hot choc for the DC. Something grown up for the adult!

Stupomax · 31/01/2019 16:53

I'm in the northeastern US and school sport practices at this time of year here are almost always held indoors. They don't even try to clear the fields or courts because they'd just end up too slippery.

People still run, but they tend to run on the roads, which are better cleared than the pavements.

ShadyLady53 · 31/01/2019 16:54

I’m an ice skater so am used to sub zero temps and slippy surfaces!

In all serious though the ground last night sounded dangerous and not worth taking the risk.

Graffitiqueen · 31/01/2019 16:55

I play tennis outside in all weathers. We only call it off if the court is slippy underfoot or so wet the ball can't bounce. YABU.

WetWipesGoInTheBin · 31/01/2019 17:00

YABU - Until I had DD, nearly 5 months ago, I was out exercising, training and playing sport in all weathers. Football is actually a good sport to play as long as the pitch isn't completely frozen as football boots have studs which give them grip.

Momdeguerre · 31/01/2019 17:07

I'm fine with training or playing a sport in this weather (off to an outdoor boot camp soon) but I hate watching it when it's this cold. Decathlon sell heated pads for shoes/gloves. I may just cover my entire body in them to watch my son play football later.

Stupomax · 31/01/2019 17:27

You could actually ice skate on our football fields last week! A friend also went ice skating around a cemetery. Mix of snow, then melting, then very cold. It's horrid :-)

ShadyLady53 · 31/01/2019 18:16

@Stupomax that sounds like a freaky venue for skating! If I didn't know how to skate, I wouldn't have managed to navigate the work car park this morning without breaking a limb!

In Canada you can commute on skates via the frozen rivers and canals - I'm really jealous.

My 2 year old has been in Forest School all afternoon and had a great time!
