Move to Devon/Cornwall

Hi all, we are moving to the West Country this year and was originally looking around Ivybridge way, but just wondered if any of you know anything about the Callington area just over the border. It's so much cheaper to buy there, but have been reading mixed reviews about it. Have 2 DC aged 4 and 6.

I live in Plymouth, so very close to Ivybridge. Callington is just inside Cornwall, I would choose Ivybridge over Callington. It's much more connected to Plymouth for all the amenities that has (10 mins by car, regular buses), has much better schools. I would probably say that Callington was a bit 'scummy' in comparison. IF you want cheapr that Ivybridge try Chaddewood (Plympton) or some areas of Plymouth. What is your budget, for what typle of property?

I live at the last outpost of Devon before it becomes Cornwall. Yes it is cheaper. Some don't like it in Callington as it is a bit cut off from life, Very little to do there apparently. Ivybridge is nicer I think and has some nice schools. However, Callington would probably appeal to me now that I am older and dont care about going out much.

Yes, as Sanch says, Chaddlewood is nice and family friendly. Nice schools and a few mins from the moors. Only 15 mins by car into Plymouth central and reasonable bus service too as well its own pub and shopping area. My daughter lives there.

We currently live in a small village so don't really want to be in a large town or city, we quiteike that we don't have street lamps or pavements at the moment 🤣 My husband will be renting a room where we live now for 3 days a week and then travelling home, so a lot of our budget will be used on that. We are thinking along the lines of £270k, hoping for a 3/4 bed house.

Callington now has a big Tescos! Um - can't think of much else to recommend it......

Chaddlewood in Plympton is lovely. (Waves to possible neighbours). Within 15 minutes we can be in the city centre, the beach or the moors. Schools are good, (I work at one). We are just off the A38 so have a big Tesco nearby, have a Lidl on the outer edge of the village. It has one main shopping street in Plympton plus a big Coop and a couple of takeaways in Chaddlewood itself.
The newer part is Chaddlewood, the older part is Plympton St Maurice.
It maintains a village feel to it, eg pretty much everyone goes to Lamb Feast in June or Light up in December.
Happy to chat if you want to pm me.

Callington is a quiet town, it has a tesco's and a B and m and a spar. Primary school and secondary school. A leisure centre, couple of playgrounds. People are nice and friendly. Houses are good value for money.
It's not too far from plymouth, probably 40-45 mins drive.
Liskeard is a good place to live too

Hi. I know Callington well. Good friends there. Not the best town but the Tamar Valley around Gunnislake and Calstock is spectacular! Great views and community and access in a few mins to Tavistock and Callington. I live in South Brent now near Ivybridge. Fabulous village with great shops and 30 mins to beaches plus a few minutes to the moor. PM me if you want to find out more or want a tour!

Floods123 · 31/01/2019 20:43

Forgot to mention train direct to Plymouth from Gunni and Calstock US bonus!

If you have kids who might want to ever go into town, you are really better off in Ivybridge.
They can get a bus to Plymouth.
Callington is much more isolated & any activity they want to do is going to be a far longer drive - a lot of them in Saltash or Plymouth.

As for the train, I used to have to use it to go to school, it takes ages. (& I hated the slow down it always had to do to go across the old bridge - that was over 30 years ago & it's still doing it)
In theory, you are just across the river, in practice you have to drive all round the place to get anywhere from Callington.

Tavistock is a dump & Goosey Fair is about as exciting as it ever gets.(really not worth going to)
Terrible shopping too.
You'll end up either driving to Plymouth or Exeter (Exeter if you want John Lewis)
Plus, you are more likely to get snowed in if you are in Callington.
Not necessarily the place itself, but areas between you & wherever you are trying to get which is almost always up country.

The outskirts of Ivybridge are much easier for accessing everything & would cut over an hour of a commute up country if not two over going on to Callington.
The traffic jam going towards Plymouth always seem to start just after the turn off sign for Ivybridge when they get bad.

Depending on wind direction Callington can smell quite bad because of the Ginsters Plant, that’s pretty much all I know about it!

Ivybridge is very nice, though essentially just a collection of modern housing estates. Good community feel, nice little cinema / theatre, reasonable selection of takeaways, and also has a big Tesco.
