antibiotic reaction

I saw my dr yesterday due to an ear infection and he prescribed erythromycin

I started with dizziness yesterday, which I know will be down to the ear infection

I took a dose of antibiotics last night and this morning and have been vomiting loads, even bringing up little bits of blood. I can’t stand up without vomiting.

I phoned the drs and the receptionist was really off with me and said that I just have to persevere with them. She didn’t seem pleased that I said that I’ve never reacted this way to amoxicillin (which is the truth)

I don’t know what to do. I just want to get back into bed, but every time I stand, I vomit again. I’m scared as I’ve never reacted this way Sad

I would call the surgery back and insist on speaking to the practice manager, also when the doctor calls you back then tell them what the receptionist said, I would also put this in an email to the practice manager and g.p.

I’ve just spoken to the dr, he’s prescribing amoxicillin and an anti sickness tablet. He wants me off the antibiotics for 24 hours and to restart with the amoxicillin tomorrow.

He was very dismissive when I told him about the receptionist, so that’s just made up my mind fully to change surgeries ASAP

I hope you feel better soon, maybe you should make a formal complaint with the cqc and practice manager, they will have a complaints procedure. Someone else could be given bad advice that could have serious consequences. Flowers

what I found most upsetting was that it took 2 calls to nhs direct and my husband eventually phoning as he was in a better frame of mind than me, for the receptionist to even get arsey with him too

I just don’t trust that surgery anymore. Their complaints procedure is to talk to the practice manager in person, I actually can’t find an email for her

I’ve started the anti sickness tablets and hopefully they kick in soon

thank you everyone for the support and advice, I really appreciate it

Hope you feel better soon Flowers it sounds a horrid practice, they're not all like that.

Hugs - shit GP practises are soul destroying. You can leave feedback about your surgery on the NHS website though, which is quite cathartic :)

So where did the receptionist get her medical degree from, then? Giving advice like that could be lethal.

I am allergic to metronidazole and can only take amoxycillin for dental infections. Metronidazole resulted in several days in bed after collapsing at work, purple rashes, and swollen ankles several days later. I also needed steroids for my lungs as well as anti-emetics and another antibiotic, and I think some other tablets. Goodness knows what would have happened had I persevered; the doctor was worried enough about the swollen ankles and possible heart problems the following week.
