To ask for reassurance about the injection!!!

Seems like I've heard so many horror stories of it that it's outweighing the good stories I've heard as I'm such a worrier - and I'm booked in for it in a week.

Can anyone reassure me, is it painful when you get it done? In the few days afterwards? And are the symptoms really hell for 3 months? Blush

Which injection is this ?

erja · 31/01/2019 09:40

@MrsJayy depo injection, contraceptive injection.

Should've clarified that in OP!

Getting the injection was always fine for me. However, after three years on the injection I started having a period every fortnight and after stopping using it it took me 6 years to conceive (before deposit I had conceived twice within three months and after he baby who took 6 years to conceive I conceived again within a few months so I doubt it was a natural infertility).

MrsJayy · 31/01/2019 09:42

Ive not had it for years but as far as i can remember the symptoms were not too bad although you are full of different chemicals so you might have symptoms and it definately didn't hurt.

erja · 31/01/2019 10:02

Thank you!

I've used this for years and honestly it's the best contraceptive I have ever used.
Personally I've had no side affects and no bleeding whatsoever while on it.
Having it just feels like a small scratch and is a tiny bit aches afterwards.

They do warn that it can take quite a while to get out of your system so if planning to ttc in the near future better to come off it and use something else sooner rather than later Smile

GreenEggsHamandChips · 31/01/2019 10:11

The Depo has been fantastic for me.

I might have had weight gain but i was eating too much anyway so i dont know how i would know!!. I now actively manage my weight anyway

Solved the monthly hormonal headaches and pmt, occasionally get them 3 monthly but not as bad. It has been fantastic.

No periods!!

But i did have a brief wobble over whether i wanted more kids. I tried to come off the depo but the hormonal impact was just horrendous and at the 5 month mark there was still no sign of anything like a period. It was probably a good thing as by then i had remembered how follish more children would have been. If you are in any doubt over continuing your family do give it serious thought. Any time i get broody now i give my head a wobble think about coming off the depo, and continue back merrily on my way.

Browntile · 31/01/2019 10:15

I was on it for about 2 years. Not painful etc BUT when I can off it I had a constant period for 8 months!! Wasn’t worth it in the end!

GreenEggsHamandChips · 31/01/2019 10:15

I also had no side effects when i started it and it totally agree its a teeny tiny scratch. Im in and out the nurse in a couple of minutes and thats me done for another 3 months. No worrying if you're on antibiotics or have sickness, youre still good to go. No forgetting tablets either

erja · 31/01/2019 10:18

@GreenEggsHamandChips @Browntile ahh, that's a bit of a worry then. It would be just temporary for me, 6 months-1 year and then I would like to come off and TTC.

I was on it for nearly 6 years and did gain some weight. I put this down to overeating tbh but when I came off I did lose nearly a stone over a few months with little else changing.

However, I echo others on the side effects of coming off. I bleed heavily for nearly a month and then had spotting where I had to wear a liner for another three.

I moved to the implant and got on this this a lot better. When it came out after 5 years (and one change within that), my cycle came back almost instantly.

But everyone is different!

JimandPam · 31/01/2019 10:21

Please excuse terrible typos!!

GreenEggsHamandChips · 31/01/2019 10:24

Noooooo shouldnt even have been recommended for you.

Really it should only be considered when you would be considering sterilisation but would rather something not definitely permanent.

Definitely not for a break between pregnancies

Placebogirl · 31/01/2019 10:28

Have you been on a progesterone only medication before? I personally would recommend giving the mini pill a go first to see how you get on with progesterone only. It wasn't for me, I'll be honest, but it is great for loads of people!

Hugglessnuggles · 31/01/2019 10:29

Why not get the coil? In and out easily, and can get pregnant as soon as it’s removed. (The same week in my case!)

erja · 31/01/2019 10:34

@Placebogirl tried that in the past few months, didn't work for me at all.

@Hugglessnuggles far too squeamish for anything like that! Blush

erja Honestly there’s nothing to it. I’ve had 6 now I think I’m total. I e always had copper until this one which is merina, I’ve had it in about 5 months and my periods have stopped altogether. Luckily I’ve had no side effects. But if you would be worried about those, the copper would be an idea.

eyeswideshit · 31/01/2019 10:41

No side effects while on it, but it did take 18 months for my periods to come back afterwards.

I didn't think it was recommended for short term use as it can take a while for your cycle to begin again after you've stopped having it.

nighttimebrowsing · 31/01/2019 10:51

I had it once. Bled every single day for over 13 weeks. Was suicidal and had the worst stomach pain.

Never again.

ErickBroch · 31/01/2019 11:16

I have had the depo for 2.5 years. I have no periods, no symptoms, no pain, no bleeding.... nothing! I have mild spotting a few times a year, that's it.

I honestly couldn't love it anymore, I had only ever read/heard awful things, decided to go for it, and works brilliantly.

ErickBroch · 31/01/2019 11:17

Just read about TTC in 1 year, as much as I love it I wouldn't recommend it for you. It takes on average 6 months to come back but I have heard a lot longer. I don't want children, which is why it works for me.
