Gristle, anyone?

Just curious to know - do you eat the gristle when you eat a chicken leg, for example.

Im sat here next to DP who seems to think it's the done thing and everybody does it (I know for a fact his mum does it), I on the other hand think it's disgusting and is not supposed to be eaten.

This is not reserved for chicken gristle - he even eats the ends on spare ribs. Makes me feel sick listening to him crunching away on it 😷

Aibu to think this is not normal and he should stop this revolting habit?

Awwwww hi there Mrs Jack Spratt.

Stinkytoe · 30/01/2019 19:19

I have a bit of a sensory issue with gristle, the slightest bit found in my meat makes me gag so no, I don’t eat it!

mintbiscuit · 30/01/2019 19:21

OMG I love the gristle!! It’s the best bit of the chicken. I am often seen picking over the carcass of a roast chicken hunting for gristle. I think it’s the crunchy sensation I like.

Aquilla · 30/01/2019 19:21

I do but then again I'll eat prawn tails.

Wherearemycrayons · 30/01/2019 19:25

I can’t deal with gristle at all, if I find a bit in any meal I will stop eating the meat and I will also never have that dish again 😂 makes me gag every time. The thought of someone actually chewing on it is making me gag 😂

Sexnotgender · 30/01/2019 19:27

I don’t do gristle or lumps of fat or skinEnvy. It really gives me the boak.

My husband on the other hand eats all of the above.

Moanger · 30/01/2019 19:27

Gristle is what made me a vegetarian when I was 11 as I got some stuck in my throat. 🤮

OhDearHowSadNeverMind · 30/01/2019 19:28

I’m gagging just reading about it. I have a real fear of ever finding it in my food so much so that I’ll more often than not elect not to eat meat or chicken that I have not personally prepared!

kennelmaid · 30/01/2019 19:39

If we were really meant to eat meat then gristle would be pleasurable to us

iklboo · 30/01/2019 19:39

I cut the fat off everything never mind gristle.

OhDearHowSadNeverMind · 30/01/2019 19:42

Same iklboo. I can manage bacon fat if it’s crisped to fuck but that’s it.

jcq17 · 30/01/2019 19:42

I heave my guts up if gristle is anywhere near me 🤮

BudgieBalls · 30/01/2019 19:43

To the majority, yes! It's vile. Once when he made a chicken dinner he sliced the cartilage from down the middle of the breast and I ended up with that on my plate (and in my mouth) 😷

To mintbiscuit and aquilla - what is wrong with you? 😷😂 if the prawn still has the tail on can the poo pipe thingy even be cleaned?

I can’t eat gristle, as soon as I bite a gristly bit of meat i gag! I don’t know how anyone can eat it!

halfwitpicker · 30/01/2019 19:45

I like sucking bones but draw the line at cartilage

milleniumhandandprawn · 30/01/2019 23:07

Ooooh I love nibbling the cartilage from chicken bones. Also have been known to crack open the bones for the marrow as well...
The best bit of a roast chicken is the Parsons nose for sure.

Gristle hunting is not for polite company though... (But definitely when "tidying the kitchen" after s roast!)
Lovely DH always gives me his bones after he's done - there's practically another meal left in them! Grin

whatacrapusername2306 · 30/01/2019 23:18

Jeez, I’m reaching here. This is exactly the reason I don’t eat meat 🤮🤮 and as for prawn tails?? Who in their right mind would eat a poop chute?

whatacrapusername2306 · 30/01/2019 23:18

retching!

PrimeExample · 30/01/2019 23:19

Just the title has me gagging!

steppemum · 30/01/2019 23:22

no, I don't like it.

BUT we used to live i Central Asia, and meat with a lot of gristle and fat on was the prefered meat, it was a delicacy, as a guest you were given the fattiest bit.

So I guess some of that must be what you are brought up with

eurochick · 31/01/2019 08:10

Bleugh is. Meat gristle and fat make me gag!

longwayoff · 31/01/2019 08:46

Urgh no thanks. My daughter can't bear to even hear the word and would definitely hide this thread whilst shuddering.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/01/2019 08:49

I was told by a friend with a Vietnamese wife, that to her and her family (and maybe most Vietnamese) they are the best bits!

I always cut every bit of fat and gristle off. Still have memories of gagging at maybe 4 when fooled into eating a lump of fat by a parent who'd hidden it in some potato. The gagging was entirely involuntary, which must have been obvious, since they never forced it after that.

Nottobesoldseparately · 31/01/2019 08:57

God no.
I can't even eat meat off the bone, never mind any fat, skin or gristle.

But I've got plenty of friends who will happily tuck into belly pork, lamb, goat, chicken wings etc and suck the marrow out

They think I'm the weird one!

troubleswillbeoutofsight · 31/01/2019 09:05

This is the first thread on MN that's actually made me heave. I actually cant believe anyone not in a third world country would enjoy eating gristle or fat
