AIBU to have lied?

toningwater · 29/01/2019 21:14

Payday not till tomorrow. Had a meeting 40 miles away.

I lied at a petrol station and said apologetically I'd forgotten my purse and filled a form in.

I have 48 hours to pay.

as a one off no i think i would have done the same you intend to pay them so its not like you are scamming a tank of petrol off them

BMW6 · 29/01/2019 21:18

Well as long as you DO pay I can't see any major crime. I assume this is a one-off and not regular, and that you gave correct details at the petrol station?

EwItsAHooman · 29/01/2019 21:20

Make sure you go back and pay as some stations deduct that money from the cashier's pay.

toningwater · 29/01/2019 21:21

Oh yeah corret details. Besides they have the details of my car.

OP posts:
oldowlgirl · 29/01/2019 21:29

YANBU - you're going to pay them back. Glad you were able to get sorted.

Divgirl2 · 29/01/2019 21:32

Future tip - if you go to one of the self-service pumps you can get a full tank of petrol as long as you have a couple of pence left in your account. I think it takes until the next day to charge your account.

Or put in less than £30 worth and use contactless - that takes a couple of days to come off too.

I've been in your situation OP - it sucks! Flowers

UterusUterusGhali · 29/01/2019 21:38

I think a lot of people are driving on fumes this week.
Pro-tip about the contactless tho.

I'm sure I heard someone at work talking about doing something similar with Apple Pay the other day.

Grapefruitgrape · 29/01/2019 21:43

I sympathise with your situation, but it is unreasonable to do what you did. You don't have an automatic right to have products or services now and pay later. You should have known when pay day was and budgeted accordingly. This January, I get paid on the last day of the month. It'll be six weeks since I got paid last. But I still made it last and don't expect to be subsidised by others!

Nicknacky · 29/01/2019 21:45

Totally unreasonable to have done that! You knew you didn’t have funds to pay for the goods.

Pinkstars2501 · 29/01/2019 21:47

My husband works at a shop with a petrol station attached. They don’t really mind this kind of thing. They give you 48hrs (I think), take your details and reg number and it seems to work fine.
As long as you pay within the time given then I can’t see the harm.

bridgetreilly · 29/01/2019 21:53

OP, thank you for posting this! Something I periodically panic about is filling my car up and then finding that I've left my purse at home. I'm glad to hear that there is a way of dealing with it that doesn't involve being immediately arrested!

countrybunny · 29/01/2019 21:53

I think it's clever. As long as you pay it's fine.

Next time if you do pay at pump as king as you have a little money it'll let you fill up to £100

Nicknacky · 29/01/2019 21:54

It’s not clever at all.

Letsmoveondude · 29/01/2019 21:56

If it’s what you’ve gotta do, it’s what you’ve gotta do. This month has been hard for most people I know, many of the parents we know have been into the school office explaining that they can’t afford to pay for school dinners until the very last day of the month, were eking our the dogs food and not really doing anything at the moment so we can make it to Payday, which falls on Thursday (love the accounts team who pay us on Thursday when it’s due Fri!) but at this point, an extra journey would possibly mean the same for us.

In our really hard times most weeks we ended up “petrol tricking” one of our cards (in our defence we really didn’t have a pot to piss in) we always left minimum payment on the card so about £3, and filled up the tank, by the time the money was collected (always took £1 for 3 days then the actual payment for some reason) the money was there to pay for it, just incase op.

Wishing you a better month next month

LeSquigh · 29/01/2019 21:57

If you fill up at Sainsbury’s or Asda or Tesco and Pay at Pump they only take £1 from your account straight away and the rest a day or two later....

ChrisjenAvasarala · 29/01/2019 22:00

You all realise that visa changed the rules, and no longer allow reauthorization for just £1. Not all petrol stations have updated their systems, but eventually will. For example, 6 months ago Tesco pay at pump at my local only pre-authorised £1 then the actual amount you spent would come out a few days later. Now, they preauthorise £100 and then refund whatever you didn't actually spend within a couple of hours (but up to 2 days). So if you've not got £100 in your bank, pay at pump won't work. This is because they upgraded the system in line with the new visa policy.

Letsmoveondude · 29/01/2019 22:02

Ah, in that case chrisjen, I understand why one of my cards never works at Morrison’s whilst another always does.

EmeraldShamrock · 29/01/2019 22:05

As long as you're going to pay, which you are.
I am impressed with your thinking

MongerTruffle · 29/01/2019 22:05

Or put in less than £30 worth and use contactless - that takes a couple of days to come off too.
It doesn't with most banks.

Huggingslothsallday · 29/01/2019 22:05

I’ve done the ‘I’ve forgot my card’ trick, luckily it’s my regular so I know all the staff well. Dp would then go in, in the afternoon and pay for me. I’ve also had to pull a sick day as I could afford to drive to London and back for a meeting. A lot of us have been there OP don’t worry, it’s a sign of the times.

UterusUterusGhali · 29/01/2019 22:09

In the olden days I've had to throw a sickie as I couldn't afford to get to work.
This is preferable, surely?

In an ideal world we'd all have the buget to last 6 weeks on one pay packet, but an awful lot of us don't.

I've had to borrow money this month and the dc haven't had fruit in their lunchbox this week. It feels like shit tbh.

exWifebeginsat40 · 29/01/2019 22:11

i am more than a little sceptical about the claim that Pay at Pump won’t work unless you have £100 in your account. unless everyone else in the land is Considerably Richer Than Me, this would be chaos, no?

katseyes7 · 29/01/2019 22:12

Letsmoveondude l've had a problem several times with one of my cards at Tesco's Pay at Pump stations, even though l knew there was more than enough money into cover it.
The last time l went into the shop to pay, and mentioned it, one of the cashiers explained that my card is a 'face to face' one (or something like that) - it's a basic current account, so l have to go into the shop to pay. My other one is a standard current account, and l have no problem with that one.

MongerTruffle · 29/01/2019 22:14

Some cards are set up to decline all transactions that are done offline (i.e. all of the card details are stored somewhere, then sent to the shop's bank in batches) - these usually have "electronic use only" written on them.

InternetRandomer · 29/01/2019 22:16

I’m with Barclays and contactless payments come out straight away same as chip and pin payments Confused
