To think we need new laws around animal breeding and selling?

I’ve just posted something for sale on my local selling page and in the local section I noticed a couple of adverts for unwanted pets .

Out of curiosity I had a look and there’s a whole section of unwanted animals Sad

Alongside these , there was even more brand new puppy / baby animals adverts .

Reasons for sale of older animals:

“We don’t have the time for her ....”

“It got my other dog pregnant...” Hmm

“She’s one year old , lovely bunny and has had two litters . Needs a good home”.

This is so heartbreaking and shockingly sad.

There are so many animals in rescues or just discarded to the streets .

I have a pet who is a complete pain at times , but I would never rehome her because I committed to her and it’s my duty to care for her .

AIBU to think we would all benefit from new laws prohibiting breeding and the sale of animals on selling sites ?

I don’t know what the answer would be , but I feel so sorry for these poor animals.

I’m sure if pet ownership came with a large licence fee , it would act as a deterrent to those wanting to make a quick profit .

Yanbu ..especially with regards to breeding. It's seen by so many as a money maker ...I know from experience that if done properly nothing could be further from the truth. It's bloody hard work and stressful ....also heart breaking when they leave and go to their new homes. I did it once and I loved it but never ever again.

Agreed. Horses as well, until 1981 you needed a licence from the Ministry of Agriculture for a stallion. Now you can buy a foal for £10.

Totally agree. I find it appalling that the admin on the local Facebook sites allow it and I definitely think it needs tighter laws to stop animals being sold. Maybe people would think twice about breeding them if they were harder to sell

Every large animal charity is currently trying to get new laws put in place - I work for one and it's been ongoing for over two years.

The problem is that the shelters are full. So better to try to rehome on Social Media than just let them go.

I wish rabbits came with a estimated cost displayed in shops, they aren't easy pets. I've got three. They can be vicious if not neutered, which cost around £60, even at the PDSA. The cleaning and other costs, but them on a par with a small dog.

I had to rehome my German Shepherd when I became seriously ill, so good for you of you've never had a major life change. Alongside the people being evicted because of benefit cuts etc, there was the pet animal fallout.

Breeding is different. There were new laws brought in last year around breeding, but they didn't go far enough.

For things to change though, people have to vote for them and once owners realise that the laws are particularly against mongrels and that included their 'cockapoo' etc then their opinion changed.

But what you really want to do is to price the WC out of pet ownership and at a time the Police are being scaled back to ineffectiveness, bring in something that would take a lot of resources to Police.

That's unworkable.

Selling animals on Facebook is not allowed so report every post

I have said numerous times on here that if you made it illegal to profit from the sale of animals you would shut down the puppy farming and backyard breeding industry overnight. Weirdly enough those same posters who say that breeding should be limited are not in agreement, and yet it would be an effective deterrent even if policing it would be difficult.

Similarly while there are people prepared to pay £££ for what are essentially mongrels with a fancy name the industry will continue to thrive so there are as many buyers as sellers at fault in that regard.

However, the rescues also have a part to play here and are also partly at fault. While I absolutely realise that not every animal is suited to every home I do think that the adoption criteria put in place by some rescues is obstructive to the point that people feel they have no choice but to go out and buy a puppy. If dogs are that difficult to rehome then maybe in some cases there needs to be a re-think of whether an animal would actually be better being put to sleep than kept in kennels where it has little to no chance of ever being rehomed.

The reality is that many of the rescues trade off their “no kill” policies and use pictures of cute dogs who “may never find another home” (dogs trust I’m looking at you) to bring in more cash. It actually suits them to have dogs which will never be rehomed, but the reality is that if a dog will never be suitable to be rehomed then it’s not a healthy dog and should be put out of its misery.

And ban the import of rescues from abroad. We have enough abandoned dogs here already. Every time you import another one which probably has behavioural problems of its own you limit the chances of one of the dogs in UK rescue finding a home.
