My almost 2 year old has been constipated on and off for around a month. Been to GP twice, first time prescribed lactulose and that did the trick until 4 days later when the constipation started again. Second time we were given movicol again, that worked for a few days and now she's back to the way she was.

Do I go back to the gp and push for a further investigation or just keep going with the laxatives?

She's had no changes to her diet recently, drinks plenty and has lots of fruit and veg. She does have her cuspid teeth coming through at the top, don't know if that is relevant.

People are right. You legally can't give away your children's money. As minors they can't give it away either.

Oh crap (!) that last comment is in the wrong thread... 🤣

Can you try cutting out bread & pasta? Maybe it's an intolerance? & trying cooking meals with lentils, you can swap green & red lentils in shepherds pie, curry, chilli, all sorts, they are full of fibre.

OP please Ignore the idiots that think they know more than the paediatric team my child has been seeing for the last 3 years Hmm.

We have been using Laxido for a long time now and the dosage varies between 1 & 2.5 sachets a week to maintain continuity and comfort. At one point we had to do a disimpaction process which involved a lot of mess but worked well. Speak with the consultant/GP before attempting this though.

In some children it has sod all to do with diet. Their bodies simply struggle with absorbing water.

Hoping your child is comfortable soon x

My DD had the same issues around that age. She was on movicol for MONTHS, sometimes up to 8 sachets a day (I forget how often, the GP wrote me up a kind of schedule). Hope it improves soon for your DD Flowers

itswinetime · 29/01/2019 23:08

Don't muck around with the movicol dose on your own there is a method behind it call your gp and get a plan! Otherwise you will just be getting your self into problems.

Loseitandkeepitlost · 30/01/2019 01:34

Sorry should have specified tinned prunes rather than the dried ones. Very different consistency!

halfwitpicker · 30/01/2019 01:37

Homemade apple sauce is always a winner for this

That and homemade lentil and veg soups

PP is right. Have a good chat to the GP. And please don’t give your child white bread as some sort of health food Hmm

propercuppa · 30/01/2019 08:18

Perhaps they should they are a general practitioner not an expert @shitwithsugaron .. anyway my point is that fibre is dry and requires a lot of water. I didn't say I'm an expert I was just offering my opinion and mmmmm it's allowed as it's the internet. I never said white bread was a health food. Read for yourselves

Spoke to the gp today. She adviced me to increase the movicol to 4 sachets a day. And see how she is over next 48hrs. I also have the option of increasing the lactulose to 10ml twice a day.

Apologies op, I've only just seen you asked me a question after my first post. As pp have said, 6 doses is ok, and you can reduce as things improve, but do increase and reduce gradually.

Incidentally, my son was on it not because he was constipated, but because he had a fear of pooing, after having one painful experience going to the toilet. So the paediatrician started him on a high dose so his stools would be very loose (sorry) and let him get over the fear.

As I said, he was on it at least a year, on and off. Dodgy digestive system with all my lot, no matter how healthy the diet!

SoyDora · 04/02/2019 19:29

No, you feed your child a better diet, ensure they drink more, but not fizzy crap and get them active and outdoors

My extremely active 5 year old who does ballet, gymnastics, swimming and park run every week, who has never had a fizzy drink in her life and whose favourite foods are carrots and broccoli has suffered from constipation on and off for three years.
OP we still use movicol now when she hasn’t been for a few days (she withholds as she’s too busy (and active Wink) to spend too long on the toilet!) We were using up to 6 sachets a day when she was at her worst. It does work, you just have to get your dosage right.

AornisHades · 04/02/2019 19:41

Ds had it for about 18 months. He was withholding when we tried to toilet train.
So you build up the dose until the apocalypse of poo happens and then find a maintenance dose.
The bowel gets stretched when they're constipated and it takes a while to go back to normal so you need to keep things moving with Movicol so it can recover.
