To want a life mentor?!

I am having occupational health intervention at work and the therapist is the loveliest woman - calm, practical, kind, gives great advice. She’s Scouse and reminds me so much of my best friends mum. Feel so much better after chatting with her and really get something out of it. Equally aware it’s not a free service to be used for advice, which got me thinking, is there anyone in real life who could - I don’t know - “life mentor” me?! Kind of like a surrogate mum who I could go for coffee and a chat with.

I’m in my mid twenties and get on well with my mum but she’s a very straight talking, no nonsense type who doesn’t always say things in the right way and it doesn’t often work to confide in her. Don’t get me wrong, I love her, but would be good to have someone outside the family.

Is this odd?! Where can I find someone like this? Any willing MNers?! 😂 i can provide good coffee, cake and a listening ear in return! In seriousness though, I’m in a professional job and sometimes struggle to navigate the politics etc so an external source of support would be immense.

South East England? Oh big shame! I'm near Abergavenny in Wales. I think this idea of support is great though. I'd love to do this sort of thing and help each other out.Smile

Solveigg · 29/01/2019 12:50

Ah it could have been ideal :)

Saying that, I would be down to chat over the phone or on skype/even email

Yeah the support thing is what it’s all about! I will spread the word Smile

A good life coach would do this

Sadly really unregulated, so hard to get a good one

ChasedByBees · 29/01/2019 21:47

The south east is a big place! I’m just about old enough to be your mum but perhaps not in maturity levels Grin

I agree that a life coach is a good plan, I had one and she was like a surrogate mum to me. Full of wisdom and good advice.

Toffiffeee89 · 29/01/2019 21:47

www.facebook.com/coachingwomenwithambition/ This is my best friend and she is honestly amazing .

RinkeyDinkey · 29/01/2019 21:51

Some of my closest friends I met on here and have never actually met in real life. We have laughed, cried and cheered each other on. I would highly recommend some MN pals!

Solveigg · 29/01/2019 22:19

Haha ok so I’m in London - yes, life coach recommendations would be great! Otherwise, anyone who fancies being a sort of pen pal also fab

I am happy to consider being a mentor or life coach to anyone near me - see user name n PM me

NellyandKelly · 29/01/2019 22:31

God, I need something like this SO bad.

Lost both my parents when I was young. Now late 20s and run my own business but feel so so overwhelmed and other than my lovely DH, I don’t feel like I’ve got anyone to talk to.

I’ve looked into professional life coaches but find them all a bit cringe. Would totally be up for this, both seeking and giving life advice!

I’m based in South East too - about an hour outside of London.

MergeDragons · 29/01/2019 22:34

I'd love this too. 27 and really struggling to move beyond the student phase and mildly terrified of having to be a fully functioning adult everyday when I start teacher training in September.

imSleeping · 29/01/2019 22:39

Id love to be mentored! But im nearly 40! Im in the northwest if anyone is willing!

anothermansmother · 29/01/2019 22:53

I'd mentor/support you, don't know if I'm old enough to be mum figure, but fit the spouse part. I'm in the north west.

Atchiclees · 29/01/2019 23:29

I fell into doing this for a 20 something young single mum who became a firm friend of mine. We met through a volunteer role I had, and became friends. She has her family around, but I was able to support her with from an outside perspective with advice mainly. It is great if you have the time.

onegrapeshortofabunch · 29/01/2019 23:32

Oh god I need this too! But I’m middle aged (40) so probably past helping ...

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 29/01/2019 23:36

Funnily enough, there was a post in my ADHD group about coaching & someone there was saying there's a parents' group, who have 1:1 buddies & I thought it was a good idea.

ChasedByBees · 29/01/2019 23:45

Onegrapes - I had a mentor at 40 and it was great! Really really helpful.

RomanticFatigue · 29/01/2019 23:48

I'm late 40s with no support structure so if anyone wants to adopt me please sign up Grin
