To feel ashamed of the remnants of the sales, what an utter waste, all those clothes, look like a jumble sale

God knows but yes, it’s a disgrace. M&S was a bombsite of a shrine to synthetic fibres which they will struggle to give away. (Light a match in the vicinity and problem solved).

I hate the sales anyway but I also hate waste.

JaceLancs · 29/01/2019 09:49

I find clearance sale quite depressing at the end especially M & S
Until it gets to really low prices then I can be tempted
Bought a cashmere jumper in tkmaxx a few days ago for £1.10 - it did have a tiny hole but I invisibly darned it 😊

HoraceCope · 29/01/2019 09:58

oh i didnt even venture to M & S, !

Sales make me really sad. Obviously good for a bargain but just shows how wasteful and short term the fashion industry is. All these items that were desireblecat Xmas relegates to the bargain bin.

OutPinked · 29/01/2019 10:03

They usually wind up at outlet stores.

goingonabearhunt1 · 29/01/2019 10:04

I always wonder that what happens to it all. Most of it is so hideous it's hard to imagine anyone buys it.

I always felt sad seeing the picked over piles. I avoid primark for this reason, ours is ransacked like a rag yard.

scaryteacher · 29/01/2019 10:07

And there's my Mum moaning at me that my Navy reefer jacket is 25 years old!

Tiscold · 29/01/2019 10:09

The amount of wasted non sold clothes is a disgrace. We're killing our world, imagine the energy and materials used for all those items and many won't get worn again.

I thinkif they don't sell thwir stock, they should give it away to charity. They don't have to give away the items intact, they could even rag them / shred them, sell them by weight to buyers and then donate the money

HoraceCope · 29/01/2019 10:10

I dread to think what happens to them,

Won't a lot end up on website like everything5pounds.com, outlet stores etc? Or possibly the fabric will be recycled, just as old clothes are.

I don't agree with or participate in fast fashion btw, just can't see that last seasons unsold clothes will just end up sitting around somewhere.

Slothcuddles · 29/01/2019 10:36

I can’t be the only person who likes a few pairs of jeans in different colours and styles, and likewise for trousers. Then several smart going out tops that are smart but not hight of fashion like cold shoulder tops. Then several jumpers- comfy, smart etc. You get the idea! But over all buying things that can be worn for several years- not just one ‘season’ before they look dated. I buy a lot from Karen Millen when I have the money, as I like the fit etc. But friends will say I can’t believe you spent (for example) £120 on that. Yet I will wear it for several years, and many many times a year. Where as they will buy 3/4 fashion pieces for the same price and wear twice each before getting rid. So I see my way better for my purse and better for the environment.

Slothcuddles no you're not. I only buy new clothes when I really have to - when they're falling apart beyond being mended or they're far too big (I'm on a long term weight loss). I do know people who buy new clothes just for fun though.
I can understand younger people doing it, because fashion really is a big thing when you're a teenager or in your 20s, but not older people.

Did any of you see the Stacey Dooleys programme Fashions Dirty Secrets?

Shocking

I buy most (except underwear) of our clothes second hand via ebay and have done for years. I prefer the prices and variety, but second hand is so much better than the buy, buy, buy attitude.
