Brief Resolved Unexplained Events

Two weeks ago, I had to call an ambulance for my son because he stopped breathing and went grey. He didn't breathe for over 30 seconds and I couldn't wake him. As soon as he started breathing again he started screaming and wouldn't settle (I had called an ambulance and was hysterical by this point).

They found no cause for it, and said it is likely something that lots of babies do in their sleep, a lot of the time unnoticed.

I haven't had a good sleep ever since. I can't stop staring at him. I can't explain how terrifying it was seeing my son go grey and stop breathing. I can't convince myself that it was normal.

Has anyone else heard of this happening or experienced it?

@Wearywithteens no, he just stopped breathing for 30 or so seconds and went grey/blue. No fever and came round by himself. Apparently it's not unheard of and 50% ish of the time they never find a cause. I can't get my head round it and am terrified it'll happen again.

How frightening for you. Would you consider getting one of the Angelcare monitors with the sensory pad that monitors a baby’s breathing. I was very anxious when my eldest was born after several late miscarriages and it gave me great peace of mind. Hope you are OK, it’s so scary.

@Ispini I don't trust those things (I don't trust anything anymore I'm so paranoid). I just sit and watch him all night. I don't know how I'm still awake. I nap when DP gets home from work. Other than that, I'm exhausted. I don't sleep, at all. I'm terrified it'll happen again.

I don’t know what to suggest but you need to discuss your anxiety maybe with your health visitor or GP and ask all the questions you need to. You won’t be capable of watching him 24/7 it’s impossibe and will just result in you being utterly exhausted. Take care and I hope you feel reassured by someone better qualified than me soon.

Hi! Have you made an appointment for you son to be examined? I remember speaking to a mum at a hen do years ago. She told me her youngest had occasionally stopped breathing when a baby, so they had a special breathing alarm on him when he was little, I think she said he grew out of it and was completely fine when he was older. I remember feeling very sorry for her as she said that this meant that no-one had been comfortable babysitting her youngest child and as her husband worked a lot, she didn’t had a break for a few years... I don’t know her at all, so she could have been massively exaggerating, I really don’t want to worry you, but I do remember that she was a doctor herself. Maybe worth checking out just to put your mind to rest?
