To ask about dancing...?

This might seem like a stupid question but whats it all about?

I get professional and structured dancing. I watch strictly and love it.

But the kind of err casual shuffling you see in clubs, pubs ,social events etc,,hop to the left, hop to the right move your arms like your jiggling a colander,,whats it all about and whats the point?

Fun?

FrankieHeckisinTheMiddle · 28/01/2019 21:46

It doesn’t “seem” like a stupid question, it is one.

ShadyLady53 · 28/01/2019 21:47

You just move your body in a way that feels good to you to the rhythm of the music. You find a bit of freedom and just...let go. I love it.

Laiste · 28/01/2019 21:49

I love dancing.

It's clapping that gets me, when i think too hard about it. Everyone bashing their hands together when something's going on that they like. Where did that come from?! Grin

bridgetreilly · 28/01/2019 21:53

Have you never tried it, OP?

RaininSummer · 28/01/2019 21:57

I see where the op is coming from I think. I have never seen the point of dancing. I don't find it fun or freeing etc. I find it embarrassing and daft.

Vitalogy · 28/01/2019 22:00

Yes it's fun and can be expressive too. OP, if you put some music on at home, doesn't have to be dance music. And try and feel the music, all sorts of different movements come out. You have to get rid of feeling the daft factor but when you do its great.

Vitalogy · 28/01/2019 22:06

whats it all about and whats the point? There isn't a point. Just like there isn't a point to music, it's to enjoy. Everything doesn't have to have a point.

TheRhythmlessMan · 28/01/2019 22:15

I see your point OP!!!

It's so silly, isn't it? This bopping up and down thing, trying to look cool...

And yes I have tried it.

Wish there was some structure at least to it, so that people like me don't just click their fingers to the music swinging their hands and elbows beside their rib cages. I felt like a right old tool and rightly so!

Bring me the Macarena any day though Grin

RandomMess · 28/01/2019 22:18

Well the unstructured dancing is relative new, the curse of the 70s disco before that it was partner or group dancing.

MinorRSole · 28/01/2019 22:23

I'm with you op, I'm far too self conscious for all that. I'll happily dance away with the kids at home but have never danced in public - I have no rhythm anyway so it's essentially a favour to all the poor sods who would have to see it

Vitalogy · 28/01/2019 22:24

You've got the right username anyway TheRhythmlessMan Smile

Vitalogy · 28/01/2019 22:26

That's another thing that hasn't got a point, art! But what would the world be without the pointless things mentioned Sad

TheRhythmlessMan · 28/01/2019 22:27
Grin Yes the clue's in the title
Sparklesocks · 28/01/2019 22:27

It’s a very freeing way of letting off steam. Also I find it interesting that we have always danced - even in cave paintings it showed humans dancing. Clearly it’s very intuitive and primitive expression.

TheRhythmlessMan · 28/01/2019 22:29

What's the point music, art, dancing, a night out, tasty food, a glass of wine..

Someone should invent something so we can all achieve what has to be done but without the fun factor.

Alexa...?

Vitalogy · 28/01/2019 22:35

Yes the clue's in the title Is that in all aspects Wink

OrgyofSausages · 28/01/2019 22:36

It's great preparation for sex.WinkIME. It was in my youth anyway.

C0untDucku1a · 28/01/2019 22:38

Is kevin bacon dancing in secret in your town op?

Vitalogy · 28/01/2019 22:39

It's great preparation for sex Would that be involving sausages Grin

chipsandgin · 28/01/2019 22:44

Lol @C0untDucku1a

What! I LOVE dancing - very primal, like recreational sex or laughing, one of the basic, free, happy, joyful things us humans do, I don’t ‘get’ not ‘getting’ it!?

Maybe try putting on your favourite music, very loud in an empty house & seeing what happens!

Vitalogy · 28/01/2019 22:49

Thing is, everyone is different. You can't like or be good at everything and that's ok. If you've tried it and it didn't find it appealing then move on to the next thing. Least you tried and gave it a go.

Arnoldthecat · 29/01/2019 21:50

Thanks all, please note, i was not being critical and i know lots of people love it. Ive seen them,,, maybe its just be who is too stayed/self conscious/too serious..dont get me wrong, im quite happy to watch others, have a drink and enjoy the music etc...
