Dodgy guy just knocked my door...

Partner is out, random bloke not in any kind of uniform just knocked the door stating from EDF wanting to check metre readings.

We aren't with EDF.

I asked for his ID. He said he wasn't required to carry it. Told him we aren't with EDF and closed the door. Wasn't about to argue as have my 3 month old with me.

Called 101 and they just said thanks for the report and gave me a reference number.

AIBU to be a bit worried? Or am I being paranoid?

Where I live it’s getting to the point where I just don’t answer the door unless it’s midday (postman) because the other knocks are from —fake— charities.

LadyandGent · 28/01/2019 19:23

I had a guy ring my buzzer in what looked like a green paramedics outfit. Since I had no reason to have paramedics, I didn't let him in. He rang twice then buggered off. There has been a massive spate of robberies where I live, maybe 50 a week - though it covers a large area. They're doing it during daylight. If I'm not expecting you, you ain't getting in. I'm on my own.

CoughLaughFart · 28/01/2019 19:27

If you use Facebook or Twitter, post a message about this on the EDF page. I’m sure they’ll confirm pretty quickly that all their meter readers carry ID. Hopefully then others will see it and be warned of similar scams.

I live in flats and have no idea how they even get in the building

Vitalogy · 28/01/2019 21:46

I live in flats and have no idea how they even get in the building They'll just wait until someone else enters the building then go in with them.

Eatyourveg88 Do you mind me asking where u got the video doorbell from plz x

Ladymargarethall · 29/01/2019 05:30

They sell them on Amazon, but two different (cheaper) ones have the same review from a postman called Sam, so I would be a bit wary.

tablelegs · 29/01/2019 05:39

Someone chapped my door a week ago like this and was from edf, no ID on him.

Got the fright of his life when I opened the living room door and let the dogs out to greet him. I reported him. Apparently this has been happening a lot in my area.

WhitherShallIWander · 29/01/2019 06:07

This has been happening here to. But we’ve been advised to get ring go as people who haven’t answered their doors (whilst at home) have been broken into anyway. Scary.

maggienolia · 29/01/2019 08:21

We get Nottingham knockers round here every six months or so here. They always get very abusive when the door is shut on them.
I always log it with the police every time they call though.

witchhazelblue · 29/01/2019 09:02

Just before Christmas I was having the house decorated and during one day a very dodgy guy knocked asking to speak to the owner. My decorator told him I was out. We were burgled during the middle of the day less than a week later as were three others on our road. It's rife everywhere it seems.

WhitherShallIWander · 29/01/2019 09:08

I remember years ago - at least 40 we had a landline fault & I rang BT. About an hour later a man came saying he was from BT. He wasn’t. Luckily I had builders in who got rid of him sharpish. We contacted the police & he was wanted for sexual offences. They caught him on another road near us again trying to gain entry. I’ve been wary since about who to let in.

Eatyourveg88 · 29/01/2019 17:07

Aura it was from amazon

anitagreen · 29/01/2019 17:21

We've got a police man going about atm trying to get in the house to "ask about the crime you reported last week", except it's a conman impersonating one apparently he looks the real deal shocking.

Momdeguerre · 29/01/2019 17:30

Doesn’t sound good and right that you didn’t let him in and reported it. No need to let anyone in if you aren’t happy with an ID. Anyone genuine will wait while you phone the company/cops to check.

Tensixtysix · 29/01/2019 17:34

Those doorbells are fantastic. A house I clean at has one and one day someone was at the front door and before I could get to it, the owner of the house (working miles away) was able to talk to the caller on the doorstep.
Wicked!

Tara336 · 29/01/2019 17:42

I have a Ring doorbell it’s great, DP got me it after I had someone knock claiming to be from RSPCA when I asked for ID he ran away

NCjustforthisthread · 29/01/2019 17:52

which ones on amazon would you all recommend? There are a fair few?

OneStepSideways · 29/01/2019 18:44

This is why we have an intercom thing with cctv rigged up to the doorbell. You can see who it is without being near the door or window. My parents have one too only they go a step further and play a soundtrack of a barking, growling dog in the background if the person looks dodgy!

I've turned away a few unexpected salesmen/dodgy sounding people recently.
