buy things for a house I don't have?

I've got a house deposit saved up with my partner, just waiting now for the right house to come up. Not really an AIBU, but I was going to start buying things for the house now, so when it comes to moving in I don't have to pay out massively.
I've already bought kitchen things, just wondering if there's anything else that's not too large to store that I could start buying?

When I knew I was leaving exh I stashed lots of things!!
You will get more pleasure from your purchases though in better circumstances!!
Shop away op!!

I’ve already started buying things for a house I’ve NOT saved up a deposit for, so I think you’re ok 😂

Houseonahill · 28/01/2019 13:41

When I was getting ready to move I just bought stuff if I saw it cheap/on offer so got kitchen stuff and a mirror and a rug and stuff like that.

GNT1521 · 28/01/2019 13:42

Are you living in a rented furnished/unfurnished place just now or with your parents? No harm at all in buying small things especially essentials like kitchen stuff but I'd hold back on expensive non essentials in case you find a house at high end of your budget and need every penny for the deposit.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 28/01/2019 13:47

If it's just you and your partner, you dont actually need much to start with - bed, sofa, table and chairs, pots and pans, plates and cutlery, washing machine

You run the risk of buying stuff that might not suit that house that you buy. money is best left in the bank rather than in the shops tills.

Good pots and pans
Baking trays
Cooking tongs
Kitchen scales
Wall clock
Bedding
Towels

ExplodedPeach · 28/01/2019 13:55

I'd just save the money so it's there when you need it - apart from basics like kitchen stuff, you might find what you want is slightly different once you've actually found a place. Stuff like mirrors, rugs etc will depend on the specifics of wall shapes/sizes, what furniture you have and where you place it, etc Even towels you might find you want a different colour, depending on what the bathroom is like.

FlyingMonkeys · 28/01/2019 14:04

A decent knife set & quality kitchen pans.
Both are worth their weight in gold! And you'll probably not want to fork out on them whilst filling a new house with furniture.

FlyingMonkeys · 28/01/2019 14:06

Things like a slow cooker that you'll probably not have on display are also worth getting now.

AmericanEskimoDoge · 28/01/2019 14:10

If you have room to store them, it certainly doesn't hurt to gradually buy things when you find them at a good price. Wall decor, small rugs, things for the kitchen, table/floor lamps.

If you're worried about colors not being right for the room (though you may be likely to repaint walls, anyway, if they don't suit you), neutrals go with anything.

DingDongDenny · 28/01/2019 14:11

I have always bought things that I loved, not things for a specifc house. Like a painting or a piece of ceramic, or a teatowel. Just things that gave me pleasure

One of the best things about moving to our forever home was finding a place for them all.

PurpleTigerLove · 28/01/2019 14:32

I’d wait until you have your house before buying a lot . Do start saving as much as you can so you can buy them when you have your house

Nicebudget · 28/01/2019 14:35

@FlyingMonkeys has got life sorted
Exactly what I would suggest! Decent long lasting expensive pots and pans and knives are worth it and a slow cooker I wouldn't be without!

FusionChefGeoff · 28/01/2019 14:51

If you're not already, start checking Facebook Marketplace. It's AMAZING. I've got so much from there and for a fraction of the cost. You have to wait for the really good stuff to come up, obviously, which is perfect for your situation!

I'm in the other camp, keep all the money (and make a list of everything you want and need from this thread and in general) and go on a huge spree when you get the house!
Gives you an excuse for a huge purge before you move as well.
