to want a Victorian bathroom in my 1970s house?

Having saved for years we can finally afford a much needed new bathroom. I am a big fan of a traditional claw foot bath and I was imaging something like this. However, although DP likes it, he says it will look ridiculous in our 1970s box. I think it will be fine - it is a timeless classic. Who IBU?

@BooksAreMyOnlyFriends
Are you able to share photos of the sort of bathroom you went for? I am very keen to find something that will not date, we are struggling!

Go for what will make you happy OP.

I would think it is severely lacking in class to visit someone's house and insult their taste in decor?!

YmEman · 28/01/2019 16:07

You should have a bathroom that makes you all feel happy when you go into it, whose proportions and design are pleasing to you. If you're selling very soon then you could bear that in mind, otherwise I really don't think it matters.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 28/01/2019 16:14

Ours is very similar to this, op.

You can have any bathroom you like, it's your house Smile

yomellamoHelly · 28/01/2019 16:18

We've just put a bath like that in our 1930s house. But we've got one with a black bottom and black feet and paired it with modern square cut black tiles on the floor and modern square cut white tiles on the wall. Then it has some funky lighting. I think you can style it however you like to make it work.

thecatsthecats · 28/01/2019 16:20

As long as it doesn't have that ridiculous squared bath shape that seems so prevalent now then go for it.

Craft1905 · 28/01/2019 16:52

It's also her husbands house, and he thinks, quite rightly, that it would look daft.

recrudescence · 28/01/2019 16:55

Life’s awful short so do what makes you happy. BTW, I think the bathroom in the pic looks really nice.

Bluewidow · 28/01/2019 16:58

If you like it put it in. You can defo put old stuff into a newer house. My house is 10 years old And filled with retro furniture.

Guineapiglet345 · 28/01/2019 17:02

I’ve got a free standing roll top bath with claw feet in my 1950s house, I think it looks great and guests always get a surprise seeing such an ornate bathroom in such a utilitarian looking box of a house, I like the contrast!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 28/01/2019 17:03

I think that bathroom is lovely, and as someone who has been the victim of various bollocky modern basins, I say you are right to eschew them.

I wouldn't enjoy cleaning under and behind the bath though.

hopelessatthinkingupusernames · 28/01/2019 17:03

I think it’s fine. Our house was built in the 80s and the previous owners put in a claw foot bath. I like it and no one has ever made any bad comments.
Freestanding baths are an absolute PITA toc clean under tho!

pictish · 28/01/2019 17:05

My thoughts:

  1. It’s your house so put in whatever appeals to you.
  2. Unless someone asks, it would show an astonishing lack of class (and manners) to comment negatively on their decor.
  3. Seeing as you are asking, I think the bath and tiles are fine as timeless go-with-anything choices but the sink and toilet are too period. Personally, in a 70s house I would put in something else with the onus on sleek and simple.
MorningsEleven · 28/01/2019 17:07

Anyone with an iota of class wouldn't be as rude as you about another person's house.

I wouldn't have a ckaw foot bath because it'll be a pain to clean underneath. In an ideal world,I'd live in a rubber house and jetwash everything.

Bluelady · 28/01/2019 17:13

Love the one @Books linked to. And what an amazing price.

pictish · 28/01/2019 17:15

A (very quick) search for ‘simple bathroom sink’ comes up with this. It’s unfussy yet stylish and homely. I prefer it to the more elaborate style in your picture.
You of course, may install whatever you please.

I was going to add the pain in the neck that is cleaning under a ball and claw bath never mind the dust etc in the feet :)

I think I would prefer more modern lines in a 70s house like the link posted above - it also looks more luxurios/hotel like as well ....

However I would go for what makes you happy most as you live there ...as long as the bath is deep enough to properly lounge and doesn't wobble when you sit in it :) (cheap acrylic baths )
I do think the more traditonal style work better with abit of colour/styling so thing about lighting / coloured walls etc...

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 28/01/2019 17:16

I think that bathroom suite is lovely and don’t think it would look hugely out of place in a 70s home if you dress it right.
There’s loads of inspiration on Pinterest....

We love in a newish build house and our decor is modern with a touch of Art Deco (genuine Art Deco furniture) throughout. We upgraded the original family bathroom due to the tub having a crack / leak and causing slow flooding underneath.

We had to change the floor and the tub only, so went with a marble floor (actually got a great deal and so got enough to put marble floors in all bathrooms), kept the freestanding shower, sink, and toilet as they were fine, and put in a gorgeous freestanding slipper bath and new wall and countertop tiles.

It looks fab and quite timeless actually, it’s in keeping with the rest of the decor and it’s often admired.

I think your plans sound great! If your DH is concerned about the style of the bath being too vintage looking, there are other, more modern looking freestanding baths!
Smile

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/01/2019 17:18

I think some of the current modern styles are going to date very quickly. I think what you like is lovely if you have the room. I'd like a coloured 20s bathroom myself and living in a 60s box wouldn't stop me if I had the room!!

PossiblyPFB · 28/01/2019 17:20

Brioche I love love love that first one! It’s not a million miles from the vibe my bathroom has.

Millionairesshortbread1 · 28/01/2019 17:21

We stayed in a modern bungalow that was a holiday let in Avimore called the bothy (google it). It was beautiful all Scandinavia style and they had a Victorian style bathroom and it was gorgeous. Go for it.

allthgoodusernamesaretaken · 28/01/2019 17:21

If you plan to sell the house, I suggest you go for something neutral and classic, which is likely to suit any potential buyer. Otherwise, go for whatever you and your DH like

wildbhoysmama · 28/01/2019 18:04

I think you're right, as long as you keep it simple with clean lines and lots of white it'll look wonderful. As long as it makes you both smile when you go in it's a winner. This was my aim when I did mine almost 2 years ago, and it still makes me smile every day.
