...to find cutting back on sugar so damn hard?

Been v tired and v low recently and self medicating with sugar. I daren't recount exactly how much I've had but am seriously concerned I night make myself I'll if i carry on so from today I stop. I'm literally just cutting refined sugar for now, though I think refined carbs shpuld probably be reduced too. It's only 10.30am and I'm already 'jonesing' for chocolate or something sweet.

I've been for a run. Had some sensible food and lots of water (banana, peanut butter, wholemeal toast, cold gammon) but all I want is sugar. Am I being a drama llama to find it so difficult? Has anyone managed it and got any tips to get me through these first few days?

Sick of soup already!!.

I swapped chocolate for no sugar jelly or a options hot choc made with almond milk (unsweetened) Working for me.

I get like this sometimes. When im really bad i try and eat fruit instead and it seems to help me from craving sweets, chocolates, biscuits and cake. Im a week in now and im not craving it or thinking about it now! And a bonus I've lost 4lb.

Would it be easier to cut down, rather than cut out completely? Might be easier mentally, and less chance of bingeing?

Needallthesleep · 28/01/2019 11:25

Dried fruit, like mango, in the short term, then try and slowly cut that out?

Well... I'm still letting myself have honey and fruit but i think I need a blanket rule otherwise I can't stop. In the last fortnight, as well as countless other things, i have eaten almost the entire batch of sweets I made using 5 bars of white chocolate, 2 bars of dark and a box of candy canes. I just couldn't stop. I'm actually feeling really emotional and stupid right now. Sorry. Offloading to mumsnet because not sure where else I can discuss this. Don't want to tell RL people how bad it's got.

Jeez. I sound like a fucking addict.

YANBU. It's really hard. My rule atm is no sweet stuff Mon-Fri. I allow myself a treat at the weekend but only if it's something that's worth it. So I've started making a really nice pudding every weekend as a treat for going without all week (if I don't manage it, I don't make the teat!) This weekend was homemade lemon meringue pie. It was amazing! When I am tempted by biscuits or other sugary crap, I think of what I'll be missing at the weekend if I fail!

Sugar's addictive and its a bloody hard habit to kick, especially that 3.30 just done the school run slump that's made infinitely better by a nice bar of chocolate.

I started cutting down on junk last week and found sugar free chewing gum really helps when the sugar cravings hit. I also have a small kids bar of chocolate after dinner and a nice dessert on Saturday to look forward to. I managed to lose 3lb which helped with temptation at the weekend.

This week I'm cutting that down to every other day and next week I'm going to cut it out completely except the Saturday dessert.

The cravings the first few days were awful, I felt weirdly emotional and grumpy, all I could think of was chocolate. Fingers crossed the weekend wasn't too bad and so far today I haven't had a single chocolate craving.

I've given up refined sugar and most carbs for the last three weeks, and I've lost over 6kg - keep it up, you'll get through this.
Have a cup of tea, and if you still really want sugar, have another cup of tea.
Quitting anything is hard, you need to toughen up!

Readysteadygoat · 28/01/2019 16:48

I'm on day 1 of 'one meal a day' and tbh the idea of banana and peanut butter on toast and gammon sounds 'fricking amazing!'

I've looked at cutting out sugar but it looks so hard

RightOh · 28/01/2019 16:48

Sugar is very addictive.

You sound like you know what you're doing and just need some encouargement Flowers

Well done on making positive changes, I promise those dietry changes will make you feel better and in time you'll stop craving it. In the meantime, definitely stick to natural sugars - if you feel too deprived then you're likely to binge (I've got the T shirt!) But you know this. Again, well done!

I really want to do this. I am such a sugar addict!! I just realise it is in everything I eat, even when I’m being healthy-ish, I snack on fruit which is sugary, or smoothies that are sugary! I have just got such a sweet tooth. It would be a good thing to give up in February after pancake day! But I genuinely don’t know if I have the willpower.

Well day onr was successfully completed. I had a cup of tea or a pint of water every time a craving hit and went to bed early so i didn't fall for the after dinner 'treat'. I had an apple instead, which i hardly ever eat!

Woke up this morning feeling like I have a huge hangover. Headache and groggy and very thirsty. Can only assume some kind of withdrawal Shock Hmm

Banana and peanut butter eaten. More tea and water drunk. Must drag kids to school and try to stay busy!

Really good to hear from others who've done/are doing this too.
