to ask what age you would let your child/ ren do this?

There is a park round the corner from our house (no roads to cross, probably about 200 yards door to door but not visible from the house and on a different road). The park is like a kind of wild garden with trees to climb, lots of places to hide/ play hide and seek etc . Rural feel but we live in a town. What age would you let your NT DC go there alone without you to play? Would that be different with a sibling and what age/s in that case? (mine are 3 years apart) we live in a pretty safe area, and the park usually has people around in it, but not always.

I can never work out if I am too much of a helicopter parent or too neglectful. Seem to be angry voices saying both things everywhere!

11 or 12 maybe?

MrsBlondie · 27/01/2019 22:48

Year 6 so age 11 here.

OwlinaTree · 27/01/2019 22:49

10?

Smoggle · 27/01/2019 22:50

8 with a friend.

Mumshappy · 27/01/2019 22:50

Once they started high school/secondary school. The same age i allow a mobile phone as they arent always supervised by an adult

Smoggle · 27/01/2019 22:51

Siblings probably 7 & 10.

Atalune · 27/01/2019 22:51

8 with an older sibling. 10 to meet a friend.

NoAngel1 · 27/01/2019 22:51

I don’t think it’s easy to put an age on this type of thing. It very much depends on the actual location of the park, how safe I ‘feel’ it is, how mature my child is and who they are with. We don’t have anything similar to compare with for my own DC and I imagine I’m a bit of a worrier! I’ve noticed some young children on my street playing out (aged around 5-6ish ) but there’s no way my 5 year old is going out!

celtiethree · 27/01/2019 22:51
  1. I think that’s the age mine went to the local park
Unihorn · 27/01/2019 22:51

In my area (semi rural South Wales) kids go out from about 8/9 to places like that in groups, or maybe from about Year 6 alone.

Belle89 · 27/01/2019 22:52

What's NT mean?

Mumshappy · 27/01/2019 22:53

Oh and i wouldnt have allowed Dd to supervise her sister when she was this age. Dd15 would be allowed to take dd8 in this situation currently

Pythonesque · 27/01/2019 22:53

Ours was slightly different (across our road but visible, sort of, from house). Probably from about 10 or so IIRC, and maybe occasionally with younger sibling by 11 (also 3 yr gap). Would watch them across the road and into park. Mine are teens now so can't remember for certain!

Birdsgottafly · 27/01/2019 22:53

Mine crossed roads to go the park, at 8.

implantsandaDyson · 27/01/2019 22:53

8/9 with friends
I'd let my 7 year old go with a 10 year old sibling.

NCjustforthisthread · 27/01/2019 23:01
  1. I live in London.
steppemum · 27/01/2019 23:05

8 with a friend or sibling.

I was always much more willing to do that if there were 2 of them.

tinytreefrog · 27/01/2019 23:06

Around 8, we live maybe 300m from a park, one quiet road to cross. DD2 was allowed to go with a friend from about 8.

steppemum · 27/01/2019 23:06

NT means neuro typical, in other words no special needs.

Notso · 27/01/2019 23:07

When we go to DC's godparents house there's a small park at the end of their road. It's a very small estate with no through traffic, the park is in the corner of an L shaped road one end of which is a dead end.
I was happy for my younger two to go to the park with our goddaughter. Mine were 7 and 6 when they started going and goddaughter was 8.

MightyMoose · 27/01/2019 23:08

Juniors age so 7/8 so long as with a friend if not in a big city.

Amazonian27 · 27/01/2019 23:08

Only you know your child and the area/park setting. I. Can’t remember but think around 9-10 with a mobile or a watch and coming back home in day half an hour and then an hour to begin with.

WhirlwindHugs · 27/01/2019 23:09

I would allow my 9yo, with a similarly aged friend and a time limit, not my 7yo.

Going alone I guess 10+?

Matilda15 · 27/01/2019 23:10

We have a Green with play equipment at the end of our road (I say road there’s less than 20 houses and ours is the end one.

I allow DS 8 to play out with kids from down the road, I’m very good friends with their mum and she can see and hear everything from her house. The rule is they have to go in at least a 3 and her kids walk DS back so he isn’t on his own.

I wouldn’t be comfortable with him playing down there on his own but happy in a group situation where I know the others.
