A group of friends at work and I all club together to buy each other bday presents, tradition started last year. Have given around 25 each time for the last four people so nearly 100 quid. It was my bday a couple of weeks back and a colleague casually hinted they had got me something but haven’t seen anything. Another friend born a week after has just received hers. I know you don’t give yo receive but it’s a lot of money and has left me a bit glum

Oh that’s really shit.

Sorry op. Happy belated birthday!

I don’t know what I’d do but maybe distance myself from them a bit. Did anyone do anything on your actual birthday? I mean was it obvious it was your birthday?

Claudie13 · 25/01/2019 20:46

Well they definitely know, yes, but I was off for the actual day. Girl born after only got her present a couple of weeks after. I’m a bit shocked really as not had so much as a card (which would normally be the case)

That's crap. I'd send an email saying 'where's my present you bunch of fuckers? It's late!'

Fightingfit2019 · 25/01/2019 20:56

I would make a joke of it, when they are all together say ‘I just remembered it was my birthday a few weeks ago, where’s my card and present off you lot? Who’s hiding it from me??’ And see what they say.

🎈Happy Birthday🎈

Are they normally ‘thoughtful’ gifts? I’m wondering whether it might take a while to be ordered and delivered sort of thing. (My last bunch just nipped to the local shop and bought a stash of cake so not a lot of planning required...!)

Otherwise I like fightingfight’s comment. Keep it jokey and light. And Hopefully there’s been a misunderstanding/delay in delivery sort of thing. (And if not go for buckeejit’s response!)

Thanks all - id rather just see what happens TBH and if no present, slowly distance myself!! I think they’d feel bad if I complained and get me one, and I don’t want that to be the reason why

Normally flowers or vouchers for a good amount of money if that makes sense. I don’t want to sound grabby, it’s reslly not that, just the principle really.

Well that is very generous of you putting in £25 for a colleague's present!! Not sure what you can do really other than wait and see. Very poor if they haven't got you anything, maybe it's post Christmas lack of funds. xx

NoMoreMarbles · 25/01/2019 23:03

Either

let it go but if asked for money for the next birthday, politely decline and explain why passiveaggressive

Or

Be direct... if they're your friends then you should be able to point out they've missed your birthday and you're upset about it.

I've been in a similar position and I did the first one and wish I'd done the second...

Thanks I think I will do that- not sure of the right tone to take though
