There was a huge scandal in Ireland not so long ago about unnecessary symphysiotomies carried out on women some who are left permanently in pain or disabled. Absolutely disgusting thing to have happen. I had quite bad SPD duri g my pregnancy but I couldn't even begin to imagine the pain caused by symphysiotomy

MyBreadIsEggy · 25/01/2019 17:20

Holy shit balls BadWifey Shock

Badwifey · 25/01/2019 17:25

I know. It's absolutely disgusting how women here have been treated through the years.
There have been many scandals relating to women and children, mainly perpetrated through the control or direction of the Catholic church. How anyone can support them here now is beyond me.
You should look for the story on the Tuam mother and baby home too. It makes me so sad and angry.

MyBreadIsEggy · 25/01/2019 17:27

BadWifey I am family with the stories of the Tuam institution Sad
Absolutely spine chilling how religion can brainwash people into carrying out such evil Sad

Yep - and continued to be performed until the 1980s.

Shocking.

silkpyjamasallday · 25/01/2019 17:29

That is absolutely barbaric, I'm so shocked, I've never heard of anything like that before.

TheFaerieQueene · 25/01/2019 17:29

Women/livestock - basically interchangeable.

toddlepod · 25/01/2019 17:30

Yes, Tuam particularly sad. Dead babies and little children in a septic tank.

ThinkOfAWittyNameLater · 25/01/2019 17:30

My Nan had this done to her.
In England.
In 1953.

And the doctors didn't tell her

She found out about 4 years ago after a fall. They did an X-ray to check for breaks. The doctor who came to see her started by asking "did you have a baby in the early 50s?"

It finally gave her peace about why she suffered so much after giving birth. The pain was so intense she could hardly walk. Often, she'd have to sit on the pram carriage and Grandpa would wheel her home.

Silver lining: my massive-headed mother cam out just fine 3 years later Hmm

Deathraystare · 25/01/2019 17:32

Yes I read about this in a book. What with that and the Magdalene laundry.....

Littleraindrop15 · 25/01/2019 17:33

Wish I could unsee this I am 27weeks pregnant and thanking my stars they don't do this anymore!!

feministfairy · 25/01/2019 17:36

Medieval beliefs resulting in the medieval 'medical' treatment of women. I had no idea.... Sad

RubiksQueen · 25/01/2019 17:36

They still do it in the developing world; it's safer than a CS sometimes, depending on the facilities available. Brutal, but having seen the effects of the alternative I think on balance I'd prefer it to some of the other childbirth injuries I've seen (in Africa).
