To want to go home early as no work?

New ish job. No IT yet as they are useless. Nothing to do.

I’m just sitting alone in my office playing on my phone. Most other people have already left. AIBU to go home and study for my (work related) qualification?

I am SO bored. Been here over 4 hours just doing nothing. I’ve read any related files and folders that I can find. Should I just sit here until around 4pm doing nothing so that I can say that I was at my desk all day?

Yeah, operational roles and admin grade posts always looked horrific for the money.
It always seemed unfair. Before anyone asks, no we couldn't have helped (beyond not creating additional work), most of their work happened on specific programmes/with permissions.

Obviously this doesn't help when you have zero IT, but I've found things like having a shared work log can be useful for jobs that fluctuate.

It was a regular thing in my old corporate: there were emails that went round for standard but not bang on regular jobs and anyone with time picked them up.

It means that jobs like archiving (which is a useful job), reorganising the shared drive, proof reading papers, data input for tasks that don't happen every day, can be shared out amongst people who are having a quiet period and then people having a busy period don't have to do that on top.

Ah I assume your going from the workable system to the "WTF" system....yes that does take 14 days 🙄 however it should have been applied for before you started! But it doesn't surprise me.

If your in the South I'd love a spare set of hands, our team is maxed out.... but they are fab hence why we tell them to leave early on a Fri.... noones going to die, they just come back in full steam ahead on Monday and repeat.

This is a big issue. My friend works for CS but in a very hands on division. They aren't middle managers they are lower. They are desperate for staff that have left to be replaced and yet aren't allowed to recruit. They have loads of work. Too many middle managers.

OP you need to flag this to your boss by email and be prepared for Monday by bringing in your work. Have you asked IT about a loan laptop to start the onerous mandatory training?

Handprints2018 · 26/01/2019 10:32

Im presuming you have your managers email from recruitment?

Handprints2018 · 26/01/2019 10:35

Damn phone didn't show the last messages. Hopefully you will find better and they wont bother to fill a useless post and will advertise one that's needed instead.

I’m thinking of doing a PGCE. I volunteer in a school and love it. So I know when I find something I like I will enjoy it. I’m also aware that it’s hard work and I definately will never be going home early before anybody jumps in!

But I think I have a passion for that. Not this civil service office job.

@Polarbearflavour I could fancy a lazy job, what skills and qualifications do you need for it?

Polarbearflavour · 29/01/2019 11:18

Resigned today as can’t face it anymore! Grin They didn’t seem surprised at all.

What a waste of money recruiting me and doing my vetting.

Financially we are in a good place so I suppose I should get started on the next novel, at least that’s something I am passionate about!

OMG! Congratulations! I remember walking out of the mothership of that particular organisation and boshing a massive Train Wine.

Snog · 29/01/2019 18:37

Cheering you on Polarbear I was hoping you would do this

Polarbearflavour · 18/02/2019 13:49

If anybody was wondering what happened here...they persuaded me to stay and see how I get on. As I don’t have anything else to do and the money is nice, I agreed!

A month after posting this: I still have no IT and no work! Can you believe it?!

I think I really will resign now and not be persuaded to stay!

That’s insane!
Though moving from a private company to civil service in the last couple of months has been a huge change. I used to not even have time to go for a wee and rarely managed to drink a cup of hot tea as it had always managed to go cold. Now I spend my days tidying up emails and making spreadsheets look colourful when there’s not much to do (which seems to be quite frequent) I do miss the buzz of being busy but at the same time I think it’s better for my health where I am now!
