to ask how long recovery from septic shock takes?

My mum was diagnosed with septic shock on Tuesday. Had an emergency operation tues evening to remove and replace a kidney stent which had blocked the kidney and was horribly infected.

This had led to a kidney infection which led to sepsis which led to septic shock (never ending eh!)

Stent removed and replaced. Intravenous antibiotics. Drips etc. Possibly needs dialysis.

She was on a life support machine yesterday for the day and this was removed last night and now she's in intensive care and 'progressing as well as we could hope'

I've been to see her. She's being a bit odd and saying odd things but then she seems a bit more with it and then she is bonkers again.

So how long does recovery take on average? She's 69 and not in brilliant health but not frail or anything really. I'm just hoping that recovery will go up and up

Aw sorry you’ve not had replies OP, I’m just scrolling back to find something and saw this. How is your mother now ? Flowers

When I had a kidney infection o was confused and hallucinating for a few days. I can't answer your question about recovery time but not sure I'd be too worried about her seeming confused x

Has she got a urine infection? This can cause confusion in older people.

Sorry about you mum Op. I don’t want this to frighten you, but it can be a long battle to feel week again after something so serious.

I had sepsis of unknown cause in my early 20s. Spent a week in intensive care. Many rounds of iv antibiotics. Hallucinations and incoherence. On a ward for a week after icu. Off work for another month.
It took weeks and weeks to feel better.
Months to feel fully recovered.

Do you have much family support OP? My husband said it was awful to see me so ill, but I can’t really remember the worst of it, so maybe take some comfort in that?

My dad had sepsis having been hospitalised with pneumonia. He reached a 7 on the hospitals 'sepsis scale' which was, according to the dr, tbe higgest score he had ever seen. It was the odd things he said that meant I knew things weren't right. This continued for several weeks after diagnosis. He had two blood transfusions and two weeks of iv antibiotics before he started making sense properly. He argued with the clock (it was taking the piss out of him, apparently) he forgot entire visits, hallucinated that things were there. It was awful. He still has no memory really of what happened. I would say he was back to normal after 6 weeks. Sorry you are going through this. You might find she gets really cold so take some extra blankets in. Just try and be patient and remember she is probably scared. They know they are confused, but they cant work out why.

Thanks for the replies. It's rather serious and she's on a ventilator right now and they're operating this afternoon to remove a kidney. They say she's unable to recover without them doing this and they feel she's in a good enough condition for them to do it but she will be rather critical for a day or two afterwards then they're hopeful for recovery

It won't be via keyhole as the surgeon wants to have a proper look around - there is apparently bacteria in there and this is holding back any recovery

I've not been able to talk to her since Wednesday - she's been sedated so she doesn't pull the ventilator out - apparently they make you gag and feel uncomfortable

I wouldn't call her elderly particularly although of course she probably would be classed as this? I just can't square that in my head as she's not some little old lady at all. She's glamorous and always dressed beautifully

Apart from now where I got quite a shock yesterday as she was basically just asleep but twitching and it was upsetting to see

So this is it. They'll remove the kidney and I just hope she makes it through

Thank you for the messages

Sorry to hear this. Hopefully the Drs can have a proper clean out whilst they are in there.

ourkidmolly · 27/01/2019 16:00

Fingers crossed for your mum. You must be so worried and upset. Let us know how she gets on. x

elliejjtiny · 27/01/2019 16:20

I'm not sure what septic shock is but I've had sepsis and it took me several months to recover physically and 4.5 years later I'm still taking anti depressants for the ptsd. I was 32 when I had it.

corythatwas · 27/01/2019 16:22

kidney infection can lead to hallucinations in younger people too: dd had it when she was in her teens and she was proper hallucinating, hearing voices, completely distraught for several days

Hobbesmanc · 28/01/2019 14:11

Awww I hope she's doing ok. Sepsis is such a nightmare. I struggled through what I thought was a chest infection. Turned out to be double pneumonia and sepsis- was rushed by ambulance into hospital when I collapsed. In ICU for 3 days and in hospital for 2 weeks. Back to work three weeks later but on reduced hours. I was 42 and in great health. We really need more awareness of sepsis
