AIBU to refuse to put my UK address in someone passport application form? In fact, he is relative who lived abroad and need to renew British passport, can he put my address as current address and delivery address? What could be the consequences if I agreed? can he enroll in Electoral registrar? is it fraud? thank you!

When I got my passport last year it was compulsory to have an interview as it was a first passport. They ask enough questions to find out this person wasn't living at the address.

bsc · 24/01/2019 18:41

Of course it's fraudulent. If he's British he can apply for renewal from abroad, not a problem.

WinterHeatWave · 24/01/2019 18:41

Desperately thinking through our
recent application. Dont think it asks for your residential address, just where it needs delivering to - ours has DHs work.

You can also renew passports from abroad, if he is still out of the country? It costs in courier fees, but can be done.

username10001 · 24/01/2019 18:47

Of course you can't !!
You put your address so put your address not someone else's .
Passport is legal identification .

Your passport doesn't have your address on it?

WinterHeatWave · 24/01/2019 18:48

I'm wrong. It does ask for residential address.

RitaConnors · 24/01/2019 18:51

Literally the first question is ‘are you applying from inside the uk’.

username10001 · 24/01/2019 18:53

I'm aware of that @FevertreeLight but you can't put random address on your application form .

Italia2005 · 24/01/2019 18:53

My son lives in an EU country and his recently renewed passport was sent direct to him at his home address. Therefore, there is no need for a UK citizen who is living abroad to use a UK address if they don’t live there.
The passport application now involves the ‘government gateway’ and other government departments, including the DVLA, link into the information submitted by applicants, I assume to reduce false representations, fraud, and so on.
I’d refuse by saying there’s no need for him to use your address but to apply online and use his own address. After all, if it’s sent to your address you or he would have to pay to send it to him anyway, so it’s not really saving any costs, he may as well pay the postage direct to the passport office and get it much quicker.

Gushpanka · 24/01/2019 19:14

Why do that? It's illegal but also pointless as you can easilg apply from abroad.
I blagged that i lived in the UK so i could use the premium same day service to get it renewed when i was visiting but since it wasn't posted and i had to pick it up, it didn't matter.

allinthelineofduty · 24/01/2019 19:20

Does he live in the EU (for the moment)? I live in mainland Europe and I am a British citizen and did it on-line using my current address - took about 2 weeks.

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 24/01/2019 20:00

@Disfordarkchocolate - You do not need to pass an interview, some people do, many don't, it's not a standard procedure for first time passport holders.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 24/01/2019 20:02

A friend living abroad asked me if he could use my address as his home address because he wanted various authorities to think he was resident in UK. I declined not least because I would be jeopardising my "single occupant" council tax (also because I am a very honest person).

Tinkety · 24/01/2019 20:08

I renewed my passport from Canada, it only took two weeks. As others have said, you have to pay courier fees though.

Queenie8 · 24/01/2019 20:26

They need to apply through the British Embassy/Consulate in which ever country they are currently resident.

lanoxf · 24/01/2019 21:05

thank you all, I was very stressed and was not sure what to do. the person applying for passport is outside EU , non Commonwealth country.

WinterHeatWave · 25/01/2019 04:00

Queenie British Embassy doesn't deal with passport renewals. You have to use the online system, and post it off.

Outside EU, none commonwealth, country here. Passport "processing" currently in UK while we sit abroad twitching about it going wrong. 3 weeks so far. Gotta come soon, right? The last one was back in a week.

Returning2thesceneofthecrime · 25/01/2019 05:37

He doesn’t need to use your address. If you apply from abroad, you tick the box on the form to say your are outside of the UK and send your passport off. The new passport is couriered to your address abroad. I’ve done that process more than once.

Under no circumstances allow him to fraudulently apply using your address!

Returning2thesceneofthecrime · 25/01/2019 05:41

Think about it - if the passport is sent to your address, how is he going to collect it? He will be abroad without a passport and unable to travel back to collect it (because he doesn’t have a passport).

Yes, ok, maybe he has a second passport he can travel on but in some countries if your entry and exit stamps don’t match up, it can cause an issue.

Monty27 · 25/01/2019 05:46

You are complicating a simple question.
He needs to renew his passport but is domiciled in Canada.
What's with the lies?
Surely you trust the passport office to despatch a document to Canada. You can pay a bit extra for registered mail and/or track the progress. Confused

redexpat · 25/01/2019 05:50

I got a text telling me that my application had been received, and another saying it was being sent to me. It was the fastest Ive ever got a new passport.

SunnyintheSun · 25/01/2019 05:58

You can apply for a passport from anywhere in the world, no need to be in the UK (I’m on the other side of the world and just renewed no problem). This request is very odd. Best say no.

mindutopia · 25/01/2019 06:55

There’s no reason to make a simple thing move complicated. My dh applied for a new British passport when we lived abroad. I’m dual nationality and routinely apply for my and the dc’s other (non-British) passports from the UK. In both cases, we had to physically appear at the embassy to do it, which is a bit of a hassle, but it’s only every 10 years so fine. He needs to do it properly and not make it more confusing than it should be.
