To wonder if you can have mild flu

I have had proper flu several years ago. Diagnosed by gp who had to do a house call as I was very ill. I was also hallucinating due to my temperature going nuts. It took weeks to recover and I had a bad chest infection.

I always roll my eyes at people who ‘had flu last week’ No you had a virus!

This week I have been floored by something awful, my face hurts across the sinus area, my head is thumping, throat and ears hurt, have no energy, every joint aches, all my glands hurt so even my under arms and groin hurt, I feel queasy and have lost my appetite. I kind of want to curl in a ball and cry as I just feel ‘off’ I feel terrible and have had to stay off work. This ticks every flu symptom apart from a temperature so can it be mild flu?

@Fluffyears - if your DH knows what’s best for him! Grin

My son & I both asthmatic, so we get the vaccine - having seen how sick DS gets, it would be wrong to chance it. Let alone someone with cancer (who also has no idea of how lurgies work).

@Minister I know, it’s utter bollocks. I had pneumonia & pleurisy and was getting about at home. Even walked home from hospital. Next day I was admitted for a week.

Personally , yes.
First time , I felt like I wanted to die because I felt so bloody awful and then last summer I got it again but it wasn’t quite as bad but still bad enough that just going to the bathroom next door to the bedroom left me feeling like I’d pass out and had used every last ounce of any energy I had left

absolute rubbish. There are different strains of flu and the same virus can affect people differently.

^that.

Racecardriver · 24/01/2019 14:04

It is possible to have a fairly mild bout of flu but it died typically involve at the very least a temperature.

Furrycushion · 24/01/2019 14:15

I might be mis-remembering but I have a feeling I read that severe flu is caused by various influenza A viruses, where as influenza B is much milder.

I have a virus at the moment. I can’t sleep properly at night as my nose is so blocked. Also feel exhausted and achy. My nose is running a lot.

I've had pneumonia and pleurisy before, I've honestly never felt so ill in my life. Lasted a month and was hospitalized for a week. Thank you fluffy years for best wishes.

GrandmaSharksDentures · 24/01/2019 14:34

Yes, you can have mild flu. Although without virology swabs it would be very difficult to distinguish mild flu from a bad cold. You can also carry the flu virus but not actually have flu yourself, this is why I have the vaccine every year - so I don't spread it unknowingly

Fluffyears · 24/01/2019 14:58

I definitely don’t think it’s a coldbut is done sort of awful virus. DH is working from home so i’ve Dispatched him to get chicken noodle soup ingredients. Very easy to make as well as good for the ‘flu’ lol

There's many different strains of the flu virus andsome are more serious than others and they all effect different people to a different degree. As pp have said you can have flu that doesn't make you feel too ill and a cold that floors you for weeks.

The £50 thing is absolute bollocks. I've had proper diagnosed by a doctor flu twice in my life. Once when I was a teen and could stay in bed all week while my parents looked after me. The second time I had young dcs, dh was away with work and my mum was having chemo so my dad couldn't do more than drop food off at the back door to keep my mum safe. I couldn't eat, my throat hurt to even breathe, all my joints hurt, even my hair seemed to hurt. I just wanted to lie in bed and not move ever again but I had young dcs that needed looking after and no-one to look after them for me. I had to drag myself out of bed to the kitchen to sort breakfast for the dcs and then lie on the sofa/floor until they needed feeding again. I was floored for weeks and it took me months to get back to feeling normal.

Having the flu jab doesn't mean you can't get flu as it only protects against specific strains, if you're exposed to a strain it doesn't cover then you're as likely as an unvaccinated person to get it.
