Can anyone explain this - Amazon

Ordered a gift for my nephew who lives in Europe (non uk) from Amazon.

Delivered today and I have ordered the wrong thing so I did the returns thing and they have emailed saying they have processed my refund but there is no need to return the item - WTAF?

Anyone else had this or able to explain this to me?

Amazon do this a lot - I guess it must cost more to process the return than it does to just let you keep the item.

I had this once with a children's book with Amazon- I think sometimes it's not worth their while to process the return so they refund as a goodwill gesture.

I get this from time to time. Sell it or donate it instead

I've had this before but it's usually for smaller items where it would not be financially viable for the seller to pay the cost of having the item returned. Without saying what the item was, was it bulky and/or expensive?

PooleySpooley · 23/01/2019 20:40

A book it was £20, £6 for postage.

Yeah, I've had this when it's an item that would cost them more to have posted back and deal with than it is to allow you to keep the item. Keep your email until you've got the refund.

I buy a huge amount from amazon and this is standard.

Bluntness100 · 23/01/2019 20:57

Yes, it's problematic for them to get some things back because they can't resell a book is likely one of them,

Their great customer service earns them more money than they lose from returns.

At the Amazon Go stores, if you change your mind about an item after you leave, you just request a refund. Not employing as many staff offsets their losses.

Yes, my son bought the wrong CD for me at christmas, he had the same experience. I thought it was odd too. Guess it works out cheaper than a return for them.

Yes I have had that with a clock before from Amazon, which surprised us as well
