Can moving house be causing terrifying nightmares? Please help

So I'm due to move house in a fortnight, I'm sure everyone knows how stressful that can be, I'm also struggling to find childcare for my new job which is adding to the stress.

Recently (the 2 weeks or so) I have been having the most terrifying nightmares I've ever experienced, they are all different and so vivid, they are literally haunting me for days aftwards, every time I close my eyes I get flashbacks to the most scary parts.

I have tried going to bed earlier, later, milky drinks, and a meditation app thingy that you are meant to listen to as you fall asleep (which I'm pretty sure is making them worse as every time they say stuff like imagine you are walking through the tranquil fields my brain goes and a lunatic serial killer with a chainsaw jumps out! Or something similar).

What can I do? I've been up since 4am because I literally couldn't bear to close my eyes again after last nights nightmare. Now I'm dreading going to sleep tonight and it feels like a vicious circle. I can't face going to sleep but I'm so tired I can hardly stay awake!

Moving house is about the 2nd most stressful thing that can happen - after death of a child/spouse.

Stress causes nightmares.

So yes, it can very much so.

Be gentle on yourself

Any major change in your life can cause nightmares. Your subconscious is working intensely. Moving is a huge change.

I definitely know what you mean by vivid nightmares, I have them myself ocasionally and particularly in hard times of my life.

Cut alcohol completely if you can, if not at least not before bed time. There are over the counter plant based pills that help relax, don't be afraid to use them, they won't do any harm.

Also, I am a big fan of essential oils. I have diffuser and smells such as: lavender (calms your nerves), bergamot, sandalwood. If you don't own a diffuser and don't want to get one, just put a few drops on your pillow.

Hope it helps and the night terrors are over soon!

yes stress can absolutely cause nightmares. It's your subconscious working through your anxieties.

Hope they end soon!

Thank you for the replies Smile. I'm tee total anyway as I that won't be a problem but will definitely try essential oils. Has anyone tried those kalms tablets? Are they good?

@Dundundun not specifically those, but similar. They did work for me. Not sure if it was the placebo effect which might as well but as long as it worked it's fine.

definitely try essential oils, they can't do any harm.

I don't live in the UK anymore but I looked up and it looks like boots has essential oils: www.boots.com/botanics-aromatherapy-pure-essential-oil-10ml-lavender-10031632
