AIBU to think that Danny Dyer "t*nguing a princess" is not appropriate for its intended audience

Danny Dyer's Right Royal Family two part series airs tonight, tracing his ancestry back to royalty (first uncovered in Who Do You Think You Are).

This programme has been heavily promoted in the press and on Radio 1 and he has generally been banded about as a national treasure since his daughter won Love Island in the summer. We took our DCs to see him and his daughter in Nativity the Musical at Christmas and my 11 year old DD loves the two of them now.

When I heard the advert for this programme on Radio 1 this morning I texted my DD the trailer for it, thinking it was something she'd enjoy watching on iPlayer (as suggested in the advert). When I actually watched the trailer though, one of the first things he says as his car drives past Buckingham Palace is "Why aren't I plotted up there...tonguing a princess?"

AIBU to think this is really misjudged, not just on his and the programme makers part but on Radio 1 for promoting the programme to such young listeners?

Really can't stand Danny Dire. His voice gets on my nerves as does his "I am such a cheeky cockney" act. I was born and lived in London for over 40 years and then in Essex for 15 years and never met anyone who is as common as he is.

His daughter isn't much better in my view. Has such an elevated opinion of herself just like her dad. Also what idiot calls their daughter Dani when his name is Danny? Just so chavvy

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 23/01/2019 14:37

Just to add what others have said .

I do not know tonguing as snogging . At all.

PookieDo · 23/01/2019 14:37

I know about 6 people who are really similar to him. One of them is a relative who went on a reality TV show and got quite popular years back!

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 23/01/2019 14:39

@Mydogisthebest

Couldn't agree more .
Did you happen to watch the National Television Awards last night ? Daughter Dyer and her fella, Jack, trying to act in some stupid pre show sketch ., Her acting is as good as her Fathers ,
Then , she and Jack talking with Dyer, and he tried to be funny . Funniest thing was not many laughed with him from the audience of his peers .

SleepingStandingUp · 23/01/2019 14:42

What time is it on?

Perhaps don't send your child links to stuff you haven't actually watched

I assumed snogging not delivering oral sex to too

KittensAndCake · 23/01/2019 14:49

"Ooh I'm such a cockney, apples & pears, Ruby Murray, would you Adam & Eve it, cor blimey"

It's like he's a caricature of himself.
Repulsive man 🤮

SilverySurfer · 23/01/2019 14:56

I watched about 5 minutes of him smarming himself up to an old man who had been guilty of just about everything when younger, including murder and turned it over. I will never watch anything with him in it.

RCohle · 23/01/2019 14:58

You having a dirty mind doesn't mean the programme is inappropriate Grin

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/01/2019 15:01

I have never heard kissing referred to a tonguing and would have immediately thought the same as the OP. It's not about having a dirty mind, it's about regional variations in how words are used.

Meralia · 23/01/2019 15:01

Why did you star out tongue in your title?

I’m from the south east, it definitely means snogging.

RCohle · 23/01/2019 15:20

It just seems a bit ironic to get whipped up into a puritanical fervour about how shocking and inappropriate a tv show supposedly aimed a younger audience is, when actually you are the one seeing "filth" where it doesn't exist.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 23/01/2019 15:36

I am also from the South East and round here it definitely does not mean snogging .

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/01/2019 15:40

www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=tonguing Wink (No mention of kissing)

JustPoppingOut · 23/01/2019 15:41

I'm from the South East too and it's doesn't mean snogging!!

My DH is going to run it past our 15yo DS when he's home and see what he makes of it!

Where I live it's kissing.

Pk37 · 23/01/2019 15:46

You’re out voted OP, I’m also South east and it’s Kissing

badlydrawnperson · 23/01/2019 15:48

Danny Dire isn't suitable for any audience.

Notso · 23/01/2019 15:55

He's just a playing a character isn't he, like Keith Lemon.

I wouldn't think anything he is in really suitable for kids anyway.

Sparklingbrook · 23/01/2019 15:56

I am going to watch. Might be funny.

JustPoppingOut · 23/01/2019 15:59

I think there might be some generational and perhaps class differences in how the word is interpreted 😂

OP posts:
Pk37 · 23/01/2019 16:02

JustPoppingOut that is entirely possible .. Grin
Either way it’s a rank term!

I’ve cracked im watching it. I’m ill. Blame that

Problem is I love anything historical but this seems historically silly

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 23/01/2019 21:14

South east here too and I assumed snogging

But I find him so so irritating. I for one would not tongue him, not even a little bit.

Ginger1982 · 23/01/2019 21:20

Cannot stand the man! He's the worst kind of cockney geezer and his daughter is no better. Famous for absolutely nothing!
I would also say it means kissing but it's still such a low class, derogatory thing to say.
