Taking baby swimming

Am I alone in thinking that you shouldn't take a 8 week old swimming at this time of year.

Yes

It’s fine.

Long as baby is wrapped up well afterwards, it’s a great bonding session between parent and child

MojoMoon · 23/01/2019 13:24

In the sea?
Probably not
A heated indoor pool? Sure.

FilthyforFirth · 23/01/2019 13:26

I personally waited until he had all 3 vacinations, but I did take him immediately after that. In a heated pool should be ok.

namechanger2019 · 23/01/2019 13:27

It is fine to take a baby swimming any time of the year. All of mine went from about 2 weeks and 2 of them were born in the winter.

Worzilgummidge · 23/01/2019 13:28

What if baby had recently had a cold

louise987 · 23/01/2019 13:29

What's the problem? The changing areas are heated, and the pool warm, how is it that different to the bath?
Both my DD have been enjoying swimming since they were about 6 weeks old and my 8 week old has been swimming twice in the last two weeks.

Yeah they can sometimes pick up bugs - I'll accept that, but no more risk than taking them to the shops/baby group.

Worzilgummidge · 23/01/2019 13:30

There is still a certain amount of chill though isn't there.

OP posts:
IsItThatTimeAgain · 23/01/2019 13:31

I wouldn't take the to baby and Mum swimming classes simply because they're a rip off, otherwise I don't see the problem.

Worzilgummidge · 23/01/2019 13:31

I would wait until 6 months but I am overprotective

OP posts:
Vanillaradio · 23/01/2019 13:31

Why wouldn't you? I started ds swimming a few Januarys ago at 8 weeks old. The pool was lovely and warm, changing room like a sauna and got him dry and wrapped up warm before going outside. No problem at all.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 23/01/2019 13:32

Why not?

Our local pool and changing area is heated really well, we’ll get straight out and have a hot shower to rinse off, one of us quickly gets dd dried and dressed and then we swap. Dd goes in a fleecy star snug and we walk the 30 seconds it takes to get to the car where there is warm air conditioning.

What is the risk of something happening there?

Do people think that in countries like Finland life for young families just grinds to a halt during winter?

Worzilgummidge · 23/01/2019 13:33

Maybe they are extra warm this time of year

Some would argue that an over protective parent is potentially more harmful to a child, than exposing them to a few risks.

Mouikey · 23/01/2019 13:33

What is your concern?

If they have recently got over a cold - no problem at all.

2isabella2 · 23/01/2019 13:35

I started my baby at 5 weeks during the winter. Can't see any problem with it myself. Wouldn't take a baby or child during a bad cold but would once they were getting over it.

Soubriquet · 23/01/2019 13:36

Yes you are over protective and judgemental on top of you are judging someone else and their baby

Worzilgummidge · 23/01/2019 13:36

I know what I'm like getting into the pool and the cold so thinking what it feels like to baby

OP posts:
Worzilgummidge · 23/01/2019 13:37

Well it's actually mine soub

OP posts:
Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 23/01/2019 13:37

You can take a a baby swimming form 6 weeks.

It's never for long but take two towels and warm clothes for after and they're fine.

As for the PP saying they wait until 6 months that's really quite unnecessary.

drspouse · 23/01/2019 13:37

That's why babies wear baby wet suits.

Worzilgummidge · 23/01/2019 13:37

I had this discussion with my friend today.

OP posts:
Worzilgummidge · 23/01/2019 13:39

Oh well I guess it is the same as a bath at home with the heating on.

OP posts:
peachgreen · 23/01/2019 13:40

I don't know where we all got this idea that babies immediately get hypothermia at the slightest hint of cold.

CreakyBlinder · 23/01/2019 13:41

Yes, you are over protective. It's totally normal to take babies swimming, the time of year makes no difference.

Jackshouse · 23/01/2019 13:41

I personally won’t becauae taking a tiny baby swimming is a pita but there is no medical reason why not. I assume the baby was dried and put into suitable clothing before been taken outside.
