18 month old, play pen?

So I'm thinking of getting a play pen for my 18month old to play in. Is he too old? Have I missed the boat?
He's getting a new sibling soon so I'm getting one anyway but wondered if I should get it sooner for him?
Currently he plays in his cot sometimes or is otherwise in the highchair for all of about 30 seconds or running around causing havoc. Obviously I wouldn't keep him in there for very long, but would be helpful to have a safe place to let CBeebies babysit while I cook dinner or take a shower.

Far too old op. But my ds was already walking by 11 months and would have screamed blue murder If confined by the play pen. Maybe try baby gates around a larger area where he can move around safely?

We used a playpen to put my 18 month old in whilst putting a tent up- it didn’t go well. She came out within minutes and ended up helping put the tent pegs in 😂😂😂. The playpen is currently in the garage having never been used since!

too old OP...we put a baby gate on the entrance to the kitchen and our 18months old's bedroom- that way I can confine her without her kicking off in a tiny space.

That was what I feared. I'm struggling to know what to do with him and he ends up being put in the highchair or cot screaming blue murder while I try to cook or shower. My flat is open plan unfortunately so not very child proof-able..,

Stair gate on his bedroom might be my best bet

DS is 17mo and I'm 26 weeks pregnant. He's been walking since he was about 11mo. Definitely wouldn't deal with being confined to a tiny space. Instead we've made the living room almost completely could proof (unless he jumps off the sofa).
TV is attached to the wall with a shelf underneath with all other entertainment stuff.
All dvds packed in the loft, all shelves taken down so he can't climb on them.
Living room is literally, stairs gates on both doors, sofa, fire with fire guard, shit loads of toys.
I know I can go to the kitchen and he's completely safe.

I think he would be too old. Once they can walk wouldn't they just climb out?

Can you put a stair gate on any room? His bedroom? Your bedroom? And make sure that one room is totally babyproofed and safe with a few toys. If you gradually build up so leave him in there for 5 mins, then 10 etc. He will get used to it.
