To be shocked at boss telling me off for being late back

I am retiring from work next Wed, after many years working for this company. Last year our dept got a new Manager who's a bit of a stickler.

Anyhow, due to upcoming retirement several groups of colleagues have been taking me out for lunch in the last few days. Yesterday I went to an Italian restaurant with some people from another Dept that I have a lot of dealings with.

We had a lovely relaxing lunch and I got back to work at 3 o'clock instead of 2.30. My boss knew this group were taking me out. He called me into his office about an hour later and told me off for being late back from lunch and said it's the second time it's happened in recent days and I'd have to watch my timekeeping.

AIBU to be Shock. It's always been the norm when someone is retiring that they spend the last week or so winding down and not really being bound by the normal time bands etc.

My colleagues were really surprised and annoyed when they heard.

Apologise. Profusely.

Explain it's once 'in a lifetime' thing.

Offer to work later or to come in earlier the next day to make up the time.

dancinginthehall · 23/01/2019 11:22

OP tell him to feel free to dock a half hour's pay from your last ever paycheque.

AfterSchoolWorry · 23/01/2019 11:22

Yanbu.

What a jobsworth.

Comefromaway · 23/01/2019 11:23

Well its really not acceptable to be half an hour late back twice in a short amount of time returing or not.

Celticrose · 23/01/2019 11:25

I wonder how many people will want to take him our for lunch when he retires.

Racecardriver · 23/01/2019 11:26

Maybe he doesn’t realise that you are about to retire and thinks that you are a slacker that he will have to deal with indefinitely?

OutPinked · 23/01/2019 11:26

If you weeent impacting on anyone else by doing it I.e no one else had to pick up the slack during that half an hour then YANBU. If, however, someone else had to work harder so you could waltz in half an hour late then YABU.

I’m a teacher so I’d never have the opportunity to walk in half an hour late to a class. Not unless there was some sort of emergency.

Storminateacup1 · 23/01/2019 11:26

Haha! Hardly Lydia.
I just understand they have a job to do, they have form for being a stickler, and they probably don’t really care about the OP leaving in a sentimental way.

Regardless of how be spending my last week in this situation (exactly the same as the OP FWIW) to be shocked is U as others still have to do their job.

I am basically at the stage where I'm tidying out my desk and doing last bits and pieces of filing. I have no real work to do as I'm not involved in any forthcoming projects or any committees as I won't be here after next week.
My replacement won't be arriving for a couple of weeks so I have no 'training in' duties to attend to.

I wonder how many extra 'half hours' the OP has put in over the years, to get work done. If she's always been a clock watcher then the management has a right to be bit picky. If, OTOH she's done what most people do and gone the extra mile when necessary, then he's being a prick.
I'd call in sick tomorrow. Fuck him!

Nesssie · 23/01/2019 11:27

she's spending her last few days of working life winding down and stepping back a bit - except shes got the rest of her retirement to wind down.
Shes been paid to work up until the last day.
Its not a one off occasion and is obviously impacting the work as someone else has to cover when shes off.

Once would probably have been ok, but how is he to know you won't be 30 mins late again today and tomorrow?

Polarbearflavour · 23/01/2019 11:27

That seems harsh unless you work in a shift environment like retail or healthcare.

I’ve always worked in offices with flexi or no strict timings. On my last day in my old job, I packed up at 11am and went off - nobody said anything!

thetemptationofchocolate · 23/01/2019 11:28

I'm retiring next week also but no-one has taken me out to lunch!
I am 'winding down' somewhat though :)

Isth · 23/01/2019 11:28

I was being an arse with my previous answer, bad day. Ignore me. Happy retirement!

DarlingNikita · 23/01/2019 11:28

He's got too much time on his hands/a power complex/both.

Smile, nod and mentally stick your middle finger up.

To him, and to the po-faced brigade on here.

echt · 23/01/2019 11:28

You want some slack to be cut an historical basis. Your manager is new, so did he know about this?

What's a stickler? You appear to assume some agreement that such a person is unreasonable without er...actually saying what they do that makes them so.

I'm speaking here as a union rep who is frequently called on to "stickle" on behalf of workers whose managers want some slack cut the other way, i.e. exploit them by extending working hours on some "historical basis/goodwill". As annoying as this appears, he's not in the wrong.

onlyafewdaystogo · 23/01/2019 11:29

Thanks Isth Smile

@dancinginthehall I could not care less, I am a manager actually I get paid to do a hob and oversee people, I dont piss off early or come in late and I expect my staff to do the same, retiring or not she is paid to be here! I would have let the 1st 1 slip due to her retirment but 2nd 1 is a clear piss take!! And if thats you attitude im glad I don't manage you, bet your a pain in the arse

JudgeRindersMinder · 23/01/2019 11:30

What an absolute knob! Did you manage to keep a straight face while he “told you off”😂

Ifailed · 23/01/2019 11:30

Hmmm, I'd be very tempted to invite his boss out to lunch, and make sure you are 1/2 hour late back.

I would have asked him if he wanted a meeting about it next Thursday but then I am a cheeky bugger
