Just got an email from school regarding world book day.

This year, they've opted not to dress up at all.

In its place, the children have to decorate a potato as their favourite book character.

^A POTATO?!
^
AIBU? I like the dress up (I do try for homemade, I enjoy it!)

Hahaha yeh I wouldn’t be impressed although this year daughter wants to fo as a green ham !!!!!

CandyCreeper · 22/01/2019 12:11

I would prefer that. I hate having to buy every year as Im rubbish at making anything

MeredithGrey1 · 22/01/2019 12:12

How weird.

But to be fair to them, there are frequent threads on here from parents complaining about having to buy/make/sort out costumes for school dress up days. Maybe the school also got some complaints from parents who didn't want to do it. Whatever they do, they wont please everyone.

I was just about to say, ooooh lucky you but then I read.... potato.

Really?

Potato?

What the hell can you do with a potato?

Maybe a black marker mask and some white wool on top and call it gangster granny? Draw some glasses on and cut a zig zag out of the top and call it Harry Potterato?

cobblett36 · 22/01/2019 12:27

Our school tell us what the kids have to dress as every year. Which I think takes away from it a bit because the point is to be their favourite book character. Although a potato might be a bit hard to dress up, not to mention food waste!

tinysnickersaremyfavourite · 22/01/2019 12:29

I would be DELIGHTED if my child's school did that. I effing hate book day.
Don't get me wrong, I love books but I hate trying to dress DS up as whatever bizarre character he's chosen this year. And since English is not his first language and most of our books are therefore not English ones no one ever knows who he is anyway.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 22/01/2019 12:33

A potato? Hmm I think that's actually harder than dressing a child up!

TeenTimesTwo · 22/01/2019 12:41

I think that sounds quite fun.
You can use cocktail sticks as arms and legs if needed.

Harry Potter - draw glasses and a scar.
The Gruffalo stick on some spines and sports as warts.
Flat Stanley - send in a pringle
The Borrowers - a very small potato with additions
etc

5foot5 · 22/01/2019 12:44

Flat Stanley - send in a pringle GrinGrinGrin

Love that!

TeenTimesTwo · 22/01/2019 12:55

The other thing is to not ask the DC what character they want to do.
You need to ask for a selection of characters, and then go with the one you can achieve.
This might be easier with a potato, as e.g. a boy might be more willing to send in a girl potato than goes actually dressed up as a girl.

Different size potatoes can be joined with cocktail sticks to make a snowman or other random things too.
Or you can carve them.

Or send them in with a 'scene' if you are very keen.

Humpty Dumpty - chips or mashed potato?

FrankiesKnuckle · 22/01/2019 13:23

@TeenTimesTwo send in a Pringle 😂😂

@TheLostTargaryen love the HP idea!
