Please go and read about the signs and symptoms of Sepsis. I beg you.

It started as a UTI, within days it was Sepsis.

In one day we saw:
A GP in the morning
A Health Visitor late morning
2 Paramedics in the afternoon
A Nurse in the afternoon
A Peadiatric Consultant in the late afternoon

And NONE of them realised it was Sepsis even though all the classic signs and symptoms were there. We were sent home from A&E and by the time the evening came his body was shutting down on itself.

My five month old baby boy is lucky to be alive and if I hadn't of known the symptoms and persisted he go into hospital he would be dead. The aftermath of the extent of damage it has done to his body we are yet to find out.

I just want to spread the awareness of sepsis and just how deadly and quick it can progress in the body. There are lots of news articles of some people not being as lucky as we are and being sent home from A&E.

Just knowing more about it may just save yours of somebody else you love life and ALWAYS trust your instincts.

kazwelch · 21/01/2019 23:46

You poor thing thank goodness you trust your instincts.

Flipping hell, Pixie what an ordeal you've been through.

Your baby is alive because of you. I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery. It'll take a long time to get over the shock and anger I should imagine. Flowers

Off to google the symptoms now.

Finfintytint · 21/01/2019 23:51

I'm having the same battle with a hospital at the moment. My mum has reapeated UTIs , is a chemotherapy patient and now a stroke patient with substandard cleanliness routines. I can't get the hospital to realise these infections could kill her.

ILoveChristmasLights · 21/01/2019 23:51

I am so pleased you got him the care he needed 💐. I hope he makes a full recovery x

I am absolutely bloody astounded though, that given the media coverage sepsis has had this past year or more, that anyone, let alone HCP’s are STILL not picking this up quickly. It’s beyond belief.

Why aren’t they routinely testing for it?!

HappyGoLuckyGo · 21/01/2019 23:51

This is an excellent post- such an important topic. So so glad your son is still here and on the mend, OP, got everything crossed for a full recovery. My father was hours from death due to sepsis 18 months ago, it’s terrifying.

Drogosnextwife · 21/01/2019 23:53

Oh OP you poor thing and your poor DS. Same happened to a member of my family, they had to have 3 limbs removed. All because no one recognised the signs.

Jakeyboy1 · 21/01/2019 23:53

Oh my goodness how awful for you but well done for your persistence and I hope everything works out ok for your little one x

SecretLimonadeDrinker · 22/01/2019 00:09

Oh @PixieBob28 What an ordeal. Well done for being so persistent, I hope your son is ok and makes a speed recovery x

I took this from Sepsis Trust, hope no one minds. It’s just some of the symptoms to be aware of.

S Slurred speech or confusion
E Extreme shivering or muscle pain
P Passing no urine (in a day)
S Severe breathlessness
I It feels like you’re going to die
S Skin mottled or discoloured

Bit = boy.

Sorry

Angela712 · 22/01/2019 00:20

@pixiebob28 so pleased you kept goimg back and wishing your LO a speedy recovery.
I was sent away from hospital in the morning, by the pm i was in A&E raging fever, blue lips, uncontrollable shaking, confused, rapid heartbeat. Still no-one spotted that I had sepsis - i would habe died by morning if a passing Dr hasn't looked at me and demanded blood tests and trratment for sepsis.
No-one noticed i hadn't peed for 12 hours ... urine output is a big giveaway, esp in LOs.

Thank you for this post

cheeseislife8 · 22/01/2019 00:20

Oh OP what an ordeal. I'm so glad your DS is on the road to recovery.

This is so important, more people need to be aware

Cheery145 · 22/01/2019 00:22

Thank you OP and I’m so glad to hear your son is ok

SecretWitch · 22/01/2019 00:24

Thank you for posting this. My husband was hospitalised for sepsis two weeks ago. I had to force him to go to the ED. He was suffering from confusion and this seemed to compromise his decision making ability. He need IV antibiotics for a week.

I’m happy your baby is better. Thank God you were strong enough to insist on second opinions.

SunnyTikka · 22/01/2019 00:31

Thank you Pixie. I hope your little son is okay.

Rachie1973 · 22/01/2019 00:47

My FIL died of sepsis just 2 short years ago so we’re very clued upon it.

In sept my pregnant daughter, just 16 developed a Bartholin abscess. It was huge. We tried to get help immediately and no one listened. She was in agony, and by day3 she was cold but feeling sweaty, lethargic, barely peeing. I’d had enough and appeared at A&E with her again.

Eventually they realised it was leaking into her blood stream and she was developing sepsis. She hAd to have it surgically drained and a word catheter in place to continue to drain it. All under a local anaesthetic to avoid further risk to already distressed unborn baby.

Last night I was back in A&E with her, with another abscess. I faced the same fight despite her well documented history. I did stand my ground and it was dealt with immediately this time at least!

Andro · 22/01/2019 00:48

Sepsis and Meningitis are 2 illnesses that everyone needs to know the symptoms of - that's knowledge saves lives.

OP, You did brilliantly and you DS is lucky to have you as his mum.

delboysskinandblister · 22/01/2019 00:55

Flowers I wish your little boy a continued safe recovery.

And thank you very much. I have looked at the symptoms of Sepsis. Very kind of you. x

Nothininmenoggin · 22/01/2019 01:34

Just completed a study day on sepsis. Our trust is very hot on it. I work in maternity and prior to discharge all ladies are given a chat and list of symptoms of sepsis. We have a sepsis pathway we commence if any symptoms appear, the aim is to treat it within the hour which works amazingly bringing symptoms under control before the sepsis spreads too far. Thank you OP for bringing this extremely important subject to light. So glad your little one is doing well now.

PixieBob28 · 22/01/2019 06:45

Thank you for all your replies and well wishes. I'm sorry to hear your stories about how it's affected so many of you and your loved ones, it really does break my heart. For something so apparently rare it seems to be on the increase.

Sorry I didn't post any links that's what a week of no sleep does to you. But I found Sepsis Awareness UK and Sepsis Alliance to be the best websites for all the information.

Thank you for reading, again thank you for all the support.
