Paying in a cheque with a different name on the account.

I have a bank account in my maiden name. There was a reason to keep it in my maiden name originally. Now there isn't but I've never got round to changing it. I got married 15years ago.

I also have a bank account in my married name.

I've recently been sent a cheque in my married name but I want to pay it into my account with my maiden name.

I need to pay it in at the Post Office. If I take my marriage certificate, will I be allowed to pay it into my maiden name account?

Could you pay it into your married name account and then transfer it into your maiden name account?

Herja · 21/01/2019 18:07

I have definitely talked barclays in to this before, but they were a bit grumpy about it.

Could you just pay it in to the other ine and transfer?

StickItUpYaJumpa · 21/01/2019 18:12

I didn't want to put it into my married name account really. Dull reasons but it's a bit of a hassle.

Obviously if that's the only way, then I'll have to.

Pay it into the account with the right name and PayPal the money to the other one?

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 21/01/2019 18:14

You can try but it may be returned. They will want names to match, but if the cheque is fairly small in value then it may not be checked.

Alternatively, if you’re going to take your marriage cert, just change your name while there and pay it in.

dementedpixie · 21/01/2019 18:17

They shouldn't do it as the name on the cheque doesnt match the account. Pay into the matching account and then transfer it once cleared

StickItUpYaJumpa · 21/01/2019 18:22

OK. Thanks.

Unfortunately I have to pay the cheque in at PO as my bank branch has closed. PO won't be able to change my name.

I did phone up the bank to ask about changing my name and it involved sending things registered post, getting witnesses because they couldn't see me in person and lots of other nonsense. I'm not sure that what I was told is actually accurate but it's never been an issue so I didn't bother checking.

Not having a proper branch is a pain. I do need to close that account and get a different one.

My bank has hardly any branches but you can post cheques to them. Their website recommends that you include a paying in slip but I didn't have one. Just wrote account number and sort code on the back and sent it off. In case that's easier than getting to the PO.

Someone sent me a cheque to Mrs Jennifer Jareau instead of Miss Jennifer Jareau and the bank refused to cash it.

For some banks such as HSBC you can now pay in cheques via their mobile app by taking a photo of it.

Chunkymonkey123 · 21/01/2019 18:33

Stick it in one of the machines, I’ve done this loads and never had a problem

Bluelady · 21/01/2019 18:38

Pay it in using an ATM, apparently only cheques over £10k are checked.

FabulouslyFab · 21/01/2019 18:38

My account was Mrs F B Fab and the cheque was for Mrs B Fab. I put it in the machine at Barclays and it was returned to me in the post next day. I went in with photo id for both names. Barclays refused it but Halifax accepted it. I don’t bank with Barclays anymore!

Sparklesocks · 21/01/2019 18:39

I once got paid with a cheque where the stupid employer spelt my surname almost completely wrong! It looked like it was for another person. But I took a chance and paid it into one of those machines in branch and it cleared no problem.

Hobsbawm · 21/01/2019 23:27

I've had this more than once
Cheque with my husband's surname
Cheque giving me a double barrelled surname
Cheque with my surname spelt incorrectly

Each time the cheque cleared just fine. I think I may have put the one(s) with my husband's surname into our joint account (I don't have his surname on there either), at a PO, and transferred the money. A bit of a pain but not the end of the world. The others went straight into my account, using a machine in a bank branch,
