DH and I got a credit card from our bank 2 years ago as due to a contraception failure we needed to sort our house and car ready for our suprise but very loved second and last child. Financially we were in a far better situation than we are now. The card is currently at 4000 and were struggling to pay it off and in September the interest free deal we have stops and I worry that were just going to be paying interest off and be stuck with this awful debt.
We're struggling at the moment and were paying 140 each month on the card plus anything else we can manage but rarely manage any more.
I have awful anxiety and I can't sleep at night worrying about the situation. The situation were in now we wouldn't get another interest free credit card or loan to transfer the balance.
Can anyone offer any advice on money saving or paying off debts?
It's totally our faults the situation were in but were honestly trying to make things better! Sad

Credit scores do repair, he was able to get a 0% card with a £4K limit, he’s likely to get another to transfer onto.

I understand why you’re worried but I think it’s a bit unnecessary at this stage.

Keep paying a good amount on time to the credit card you've got. Then nearer September ...maybe about July ...use the Martin Lewis site to find the best free transfer deal you can get. By paying more than the minimum on time each month you should raise your credit score so don't check it out until nearer the time. You are taking a sensible approach while the debt is manageable an by July/August you will be asking to transfer a smaller amount. Good luck.

I'd try applying for another

I have a lot of credit card debt from being stupid when I was younger. I recently transferred a big chunk of it even though I was convinced I wouldn’t get accepted for another card. I applied via Experian, they showed my credit score was good but percentage of debt to income was high and I still got a 28month 0% balance transfer with Barclaycard. Experian recommended it based on the info they had from my credit file and I was accepted, despite having tried and being refused for an M&S card the week before (which was recommended via money saving expert).

The balance I transferred will be paid off before the zero percent deal runs out and Barclaycard show me ongoing zero percent transfer offers when I log on, so I can stick with them or transfer to another provider for the next chunk of debt.

I feel so much better about the debt, realistically it could all be paid on about 4 years which is still a long time but much better than the 15plus I was looking at 3 months ago.

Option one would be to see if you can get another credit card with 0% interest so you can balance transfer. If you can’t as you may not have the credit rating ring the credit card and explain the situation. See if you can set up a plan with them to freeze the interest and commit to making a set payment every month.
Other option is to ring stepchange or another debt management charity and they can arrange such arrangements with the company. I’ve found most lenders are pretty accommodating if you are open and honest.

Balance transfer to buy yourselves more time then set up a direct debit or standing order, cut back on luxuries and increase payments if and when possible. And try not to use it for wants, only use it in absolute emergencies.

You need to go on the financial boards here on MN and look for posts by talkinpeace (he/she uses a variety of usernames but they're all variations on the above.) They've done some amazing posts on managing debt and spreadsheets to help you work out the best way to clear it. If you're interest free until September then there's no rush to apply for another deal. If you have never missed payments etc then you may find your credit rating is better than you think.
