Ok i started this course to become an electrician back in September, throughly enjoyed it at first but by March we had a new lecturer who i find it hard to communicate with, a store person who was calling the other students dickheads when they made mistakes and generally things got a bit hot under the collar.
I got called into discuss the situation and basically felt that the course leader was saying give up you aint gonna pass this.
Anyway I thought NO i've come this far I will pass these exams and went on to pass all the written work, I was only one of three out of 16 of us who didn't have to resit any of the written work.
It then comes to the practical exam we had to install 4 sockets and a light switch which could be turned on at three points.
We should have had from 9am to 5pm to complete this task, but at 4pm we got asked to leave as the room was required for night school and we had to finish off the next day.
So my work is all looking great and is working fine up to this point, come the next morning time is ticking on and the course leader pops his head round and says, "you're running out of time, just get this working, you're not marked on what it looks like".
Luckily he says this in front of another lecturer.
So I do just that, it works, it's tested, it's safe and look great in places but not great at the point where he says stop worrying about the appearance.
We wait 2 weeks for the results and ......
Guess what, I've failed on the appearance, would I like to resit.
So I tackle the course leader about this and he denies everything, so what to do next, I've told him that the other tutor heard him say it and that another lecturer saw my work up to the point where he started giving me advice and he still denies saying it, saying i'm sorry you failed, nobody likes failing.
I really, really feel like he wasn't going to let me prove him wrong by passing everything and so the one thing he could control he made sure i failed on.

What do you think ?

I should have said sorry, I complained about the "dickhead" comments in writing to the course leader, nothing was done about it.

Have you got a personal tutor? They'll be your first point of call if you are appealing/complaining about this decision. If you don't have a personal tutor then consult your course/year rep or student's union. Have you got a course handbook that tells you the proceedure for appeals?

Hideehi · 01/07/2007 10:50

He is my personal tutor, i will appeal if anyone thinks that would be the right thing to do ?
I don't want to be causing trouble for the sake of it but equally I don't want to resit this for the sake of it either because I don't trust them.

Can you have a meeting with your tutor's superior?
Make a list of all the problems, and take it with you.

Hideehi · 01/07/2007 10:52

Yes I will do that, luckily there's photographic evidence, I'm just concerned about the other tutors backing me up and putting them in an awkard position but I have to don't I ?

You definately have to raise this to the tutor with the evidence. Are they also denying that you had to leave the room early?

Hideehi · 01/07/2007 11:37

No they can't deny that we left the room early, it's just what he said to me he said he didn't say but the other guy heard him.
I'm going to go in on Monday and ask to see the photographs and the assessor and see where to go from there.
Thanks I was worried it was me being a moaning minnie, which is how i was made to feel.

TBH I would be fuming if it was me. Good Luck with your conversation on Monday

Hideehi · 03/07/2007 14:43

Well i've been advised to just resit it, apparently there will be all sorts of implications for me if I pursue this matter so I'm to keep my mouth shut and get on with.
I can see where the lecturers coming from and it's my word against his so at least I've now had a practise run and should get top marks next time.

hidehi, if it were me i'd be tempted to take the course of least resistance (pardon the pun) and resit, if this meant i could pass the course without significant wait or any further implications. However i do think that you should make it plain that you think you have been unfairly treated. If you do not get any joy with your tutors line manager then it may be worth talking to your student union representive. My DD was involved with the student union at college and they can be like rotweillers with a bone if they feel someone has been unfairly treated. If you were not given adequate time to finish the exam then you should be allowed to resit or have your marks changed accordingly.

Well done for keeping up with the course and best of luck for the future.

Good plan, I have loads of time to prepare and tbh I don't want to go back there next year anyway, it's just that no other college offers the course.
I doubt i'd get a good reference anyway, i think i blagged it and am lucky but to hell with them.

If this is what you want to do, you have to do whatever it takes to pass it, and sod them lot of them. Even if your tutor is deliberately trying to make your life difficult (power freak? sexist pig?), I am not sure that complaining and starting actions against them is quite the way to go. There is more than one way to kill a cat, and softly softly seems to be the best one at this point. Determination and perseverance will pay off where reacting hotly may not. One day you may be in a position to employ that awful man, and you can tell him to sling his hook.

Also, isn't there a woman only building college in London? (I am assuming you are a woman, given your moniker!). You might be able to retake there.
