I have minton floor tiles through out my hallway and in the kitchen black and red quarry tiles. The mop just doesnt seem to get them clean looking.

I am going to have to get on my hands and knees with a scrubbing brush this weekend to clean them am thinking with sugar soap? would this work?

AIBU to use sugar soap on 150 year old tiles?

I should think 150 years ago they were using much harsher chemicals than sugar soap. But if you're worried, use washing up liquid in hot water. That won't damage anything.

I wouldn't. Isn't it really abrasive?

The national trust house I volunteered at used sensitive washing up liquid in warm water on the hard floors.

Have you tried getting the floor quite wet with the mop, leaving it for 5 mins or so and then using a softish broom to rub over it, then mopping up with a wrung out mop then a final going over with a damp mop using clean water?

I find the soaking time makes a lot of difference.

Steam mop? No chemicals involved

You can get something from HG which is specifically designed to clean these types of tiles.

I think there's some specific advice on cleaning minton tiles. www.realhomes.com/advice/restoring-and-cleaning-old-hallway-floor-tiles
