to expect carpet fitters to...

put the blardy door back on dd's room when they've finished laying her new carpet, obviously the base will have to be chopped off, but is it not a normal part of their service? How am I supposed to do it?!

Tell me about it. We had the same problem.

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 30/06/2007 22:39

its not part of their service. you have to do it.

woopsadaisy · 30/06/2007 22:40

you can just buy a plainer thing that shaves little bits off and do it that way

TheArmadillo · 30/06/2007 22:42

Agree wiht LVofC.

They lay the carpet not fix the door.

Planer easy enough to use.

PeachesMcLean · 30/06/2007 22:44

Well obviously they lay the carpet. But it certainly came as a surprise to us that they don't do a full service, ie, get things back to normal. I'm certainly not able to rehang a door and I didn't expect the additional expense of having to hire someone to do it.

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 30/06/2007 22:47

its not their job.

Desiderata · 30/06/2007 22:49

It you wanted the full service you should have asked for it.

My brother's a carpet fitter. He's happy to re-hang doors if he's asked, and if he's paid.

They're not carpenters.

PeachesMcLean · 30/06/2007 22:55

It's just that no one tells you until you find out the hard way. I'm talking proper big carpet shop service here - the sort of companies that pride themselves on good customer service. It's not the fault of the carpet fitters themselves, obviously. They didn't sell the service, in our case. It's that I'd like to have known in advance, not when you're left with a door leaning against the wall on the landing.

wrinklytum · 30/06/2007 22:55

Whereabouts are you?

DP hangs doors for mates rates of £25

PeachesMcLean · 30/06/2007 22:57

Cardiff. I'm certainly hoping to need someone over the next few months and have been glad to be reminded about this to be honest.

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 30/06/2007 22:58

irt said it on my invoice that they wont do doors.

Aero · 30/06/2007 22:58

We had the same problem. Came as a shock first time, but now I expect it. Has never cost me more than £15 to have a door adjusted and re-hung. Just call a few local carpenters. Many are happy to fit in a small job.

wrinklytum · 30/06/2007 23:01

Nowhere near Cardiff,I am afraid

Tis a lovely city, though.Once went out with guy from there and have happy memories

wrinklytum · 30/06/2007 23:02

Actually think £15 is about going rate.Last job to friends was to hang 3 doors and he charged £25.

Desiderata · 30/06/2007 23:21

The only doors my bro re-hangs for free are sweet old ladies

pamplemousse · 01/07/2007 15:00

Ok ok some of you I realise they are carpet fitters not door rehangers!!!! Put your claws away, jeez, I was only asking!!!
Will phone a carpenter then, its a bit of a pita if you don't realise these things, tis all.
Am in E Sussex, if you are near me, if not will get the yellow pages out as finding time for normal household stuff, looking after baby and going out to keep myself sane is enough without planing the bottoms off doors as well!

Throw the door away and get a bead curtain. Job done and less hassle

Agnes

geekgirl · 02/07/2007 06:28

it's really easy to do it yourself, honestly, and will take you all of 5 minutes.
Just get a little planer from the DIY shop and shave a bit off the bottom, and then ask a friend to hold the door in place whilst you screw it in (they don't need to hold it up, just shove a couple of magazines underneath it whilst you reattach it).
