Am I blaming myself for this?

Last night me and my DP got home after a few hours of drinking. An argument started over something minuscule and it got heated, mainly by me not letting it go. My partner then pushed me and my head whacked on the floor, I don’t know if this was intentional. He then put his hands round my neck. I called 999 and gave details as I was scared, then tried to backtrack as I didn’t want him to get arrested. They came out regardless and because he has admitted it they’ve charged him with an assault and he’s to appear in court tomorrow.

I blame myself for not letting it go and screaming far too much, am I being naive? I know it should never resort to physical violence however I feel I was just prodding the fire. Nothing similar in past occasions.

Its not your fault

You need to end this relationship op, can you call Womens Aid for advice?

As previous posters have said HE had a choice walk away leave the house calm down a person cannot be owned we are each responsible for ourselves. You have said you will quit drinking good but that's only your side fixed. HE chose to make physical contact HE chose to hurt you.

How is he behaving towards you today? The fact that he didn't stop after pushing you over, but came at you again and put his hands around your neck speaks volumes. And your already making excuses for him. See him for what he is - a violent bully, please leave OP

He is currently still under police custody, I received a call this morning from them and he is to appear at court this afternoon. I know the relationship is over, just struggling to come to grips with it all.

If someone strangles you he is a shit. Please, please remember that shouting at someone isn't illegal, but hitting their head on the floor and strangling them is. It doesn't matter that you shouted or screamed, what he's done is not legal. Don't blame yourself because of his reaction, whatever you did.
