to wish some people would stop getting high energy dogs

Specifically the people who cant/wont provide them with the exercise and stimulation they need?

Family member and his wife have a new dog (lab retreiver), walk it now and again, shut it in the kitchen whilst they are home and muzzle it at night because he keeps destroying the house.

Another family member who has severe arthritis and cant walk much has just got a border collie.

Why the fuck do people get these working, high energy dogs who needs hours per day of exercise and think a 30 minute stroll around the block twice a week will be ok. WHY???

Because people are idiots.

Because people want what they want and don't think/care about the needs of the dogs.

May I add people who follow fashion and buy dogs that can't breathe properly just because they like the look.

IhateBoswell · 20/01/2019 12:17

Because they're selfish.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 20/01/2019 12:21

I wish they'd stop to think too. My sister has a tiny house with a teeny-tiny garden and is out at work all day. So quite why she thought that getting a springer spaniel was a good idea I don't know.
She is shocked that the dog is out of control and her house is a midden.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 20/01/2019 12:21

YANBU.

I have a dog that ended up on its fourth owner in 18 months because halfwits didn't account for the amount of exercise the breed requires, were unwilling or unable to step up and provide it, and were then surprised when behavioural problems emerged that they couldn't be bothered to address.

I'm still trying to clear up the completely unnecessary mess they made, and probably will be for the rest of DDog's life.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 20/01/2019 12:24

YANBU. Also people who don't look into what their dog was originally bred for and then complain when the dog exhibits these traits.

RayRayBidet · 20/01/2019 12:25

Don't. I watched a series called six puppies and us. One family already had a King Charles spaniel that was carried around like a handbag.
They got a Weimeraner which is huge and a quick google search tells you it's a breed that needs huge amounts of exercise, in fact one of the breeds with the highest requirements. Yet they expected their 11 year old son to do it all as it was "his dog".

Then they were really shocked it was ripping the house up and aggressive to the dog they already had.
I mean literally a two minute google and I found that out. Ffs.

BlingLoving · 20/01/2019 12:26

Drives me crazy. Our old neighbours kept getting big dogs, that were kept in the conservatory and an outside pen, never got walked etc and then were constantly having to rehome because the "dog was crazy and I couldn't trust it around the kids". I had to drop something at her new place and the dogs are now being kept int he side bit down the side of her house during the day....

And yet, she THINKS she's a dog lover!?

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 20/01/2019 12:27

It’s the same when you see people out with huskies post-Game of Thrones.

Because an animal that’s used to running 5+ miles while pulling a sledge across arctic tundra is going to be totally content with a 20 minute scoot around the housing development everyday instead.

I’m not a dog person and don’t pretend to be an expert, but if I can see the problems of adopting a breed totally unsuited for your circumstances then how come people who are supposed animal lovers and “have done their research” can’t?

Gushpanka · 20/01/2019 12:28

We adopted a boxer lab cross. We were his 4th home and he was only 5, bless him. We never understood why as he was a fabulous family dog.i suspect he wasn't exercised enough. It's sad and it's stupid.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 20/01/2019 12:29

If they are leaving that poor dog muzzled overnight they need reporting to the rspca and prosecuting for cruelty. 🤬

RayRayBidet · 20/01/2019 12:30

@PennyMordauntsLadyBrain
Same here. I've never actually owned a dog but even I can work out that a highly intelligent, extremely energetic Weimeraner is not going to be happy living in a tiny house with a turn round the rec twice a day.

Greyhound22 · 20/01/2019 12:30

YANBU

Because people buy dogs that they like the look of rather than what suits their family life and situation.

Then they either spend their lives shut in crates or kitchens or get passed around or end up in re-homing centres.

People are arseholes.

Also the availability of puppies. People decide they want a cockerpoo or whatever the latest trend is and want one that day. Any reputable breeder would have a waiting list and home check etc.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 20/01/2019 12:30

My son would love a dog. Pines for one, and goes gooey whenever he’s given the go ahead to interact with the ones owned by other people.

We don’t have one, we’re out all the time and wouldn’t be able to walk and socialise a dog to the extent needed to keep it happy.

I thought it was relatively simple?

When he’s older I think my son will probably volunteer at a rescue walking dogs T the weekend. Not enough, but better than nothing.

umpteennamechanges · 20/01/2019 12:31

Surely leaving it muzzled all night is dangerous? What if it was sick? Sad

Honestly...I would consider that abusive.

GunpowderGelatine · 20/01/2019 12:32

Because they're stupid and selfish. SIL is like this, she has 3 Collies works full time, travels 3 times a week 2 hours away for her DD to play football...so she built a penned off but in the garden for them, which has a kennel and is full of dog shit. She thinks them running round in circles is them getting exercise. They've had numerous complaints because the dogs constantly bark, but rather than actually doing anything she just puts it down to "arsehole neighbours". Poor things, they get walked maybe twice a week when someone can be arsed and even then it's a short one because "they pull on the lead too much" Hmm

Purplecatshopaholic · 20/01/2019 12:47

Because some people are idiots! Very cruel to the dogs - its not their fault they wreck the house - they are bored and need stimulation.

TheLostTargaryen · 20/01/2019 12:54

DB bought a Border Collie. I have no idea why because he was never ever walked! (DB would take the car to the shop at the bottom of his street)
He's now got a "designer dog" (aka mongrel costing £500!) and won't train him. The dog wouldn't come back when called and used to dash for the door. So instead of training the dog, they had a fence built and pick the wriggling dog up whenever there someone at the door. It's easier to just train the dog to obey than physically restrain them every day.

Brigante9 · 20/01/2019 13:04

Muzzling a dog overnight means restricting access to water. Disgusting behaviour. I can’t understand these idiots who buy a dog then ignore it and wonder why it’s behaviour is so annoying. My lot are contented little creatures because they get proper stimulation/exercise.
