Horrible cough

I have a cough, it’s mostly dry but producing a little bit of mucus, I imagine because my throat is so irritated. It’s very deep and all consuming.

I’ve barely slept for 3 nights.

I’ve tried rubbish OTC cough remedies. I’ve tried hot honey & lemon, I’ve tried a humidifier and vicks.

Does anything work?

I’m at my wits end

AIBU to want to remove my own head?!

DS has this also. No advice I’m afraid, just sympathy.

My Mam swears by mixing coffee granules, honey and hot water. She gets a lot of nighttime coughs and this is the only thing that what's worked for her

I’m not normally a coffee drinker, tad worried the granualsnwould keep me up all night with or without the cough. I might give it a go in the daytime though

Try some night nurse if you can take it. It will definitely help you to sleep. I've never found a decent cough medicine. Those cough sweets that numb your throat are quite good. Sorry can't remember the name. Hope you feel better soon.

Ooh no. Don't have coffee if you want to sleep!

I think it's this year's virus. I had it, which then developed into flu like symptoms (headache, fever etc) and then finally mucus (although not much).
I got some Covonia throat spray which helped a little bit, as did alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen. Tyrozets also numb the throat a bit. Also eating a bit of honey coats the throat for a short while.

Is this the first time you've had it? If it happens every time you have a cold it might be a sign you have (mild) asthma, and an inhaler might help. The other thing I find that helps is codeine - you can get OTC co-codamol, you have to watch because it can be addictive but if you only take it at night and not continuously it should be fine. Also sleep sitting up - prop yourself up on pillows. Symapthies, it's horrible.

I had the same, after a mild cold, just wouldn't shift.
I went to ask pharmacist's advice and while waiting for him, had a coughing fit. The very experienced (non pharmacist) woman behind the counter had been watching me and noticed that I was swallowing a lot. She suggested that my problem wasn't in my lungs, but post nasal drip which was going down my airway.
She suggested Green Sudafed to reduce the congestion at the back of my nose, which worked. (my nose ran like a tap for a day or two but at least that didn't make me feel like I was choking)

You have my sympathy, I had an awful cough in the autumn following a normal cold. It kept me awake, any time I ate I’d have a coughing fit , I would cough until I was sick sometimes, which I’ve not done since I was a child.

A throat numbing spray really helped although only briefly. And cough sweets helped slightly. I found night nurse didn’t really do much for me tbh.

DH has had the exact same cough for over 2 weeks OP. He went to the GP who said it's viral and can take weeks but will clear up on its own.

A DF with an interest in traditional medicine suggested a remedy which we have tried past few days and it's really helping. He is coughing less at night and in the morning bringing up phlegm. She suggested half teaspoon of crushed cardamom seeds with some honey on it before bed.
Cardamom contains compounds which help relax the airway and improve breathing, its great for asthmatics.
