My DS is 2, has had constant double ear infections and glue ear for months now. We're on the 9th round of antibiotics since October and still not much improvement.

He's not well, very lethargic and is very aggravated by his ears. Whilst waiting for the referrals and blood tests what can I honestly do. I'm probably being over sensitive because I'm just so worried about him and tired from the few hours of sleep I get at night because he wakes screaming in pain.

I keep being told by how awful antibiotics are for children and that I should refuse them. But when his temperature is at 39, the doctor can see they're inflamed and bulging both sides what am I to do? I know they aren't good for him and I certainly don't beg for them, but what am I supposed to do?

My son was the same as BarryTheKestrel’s daughter.

Having his tonsils and adenoids removed were miraculous and he never had any more problems.

I don't know how much was a placebo effect, which at 2 is unlikely to be relevant, but my DCs always found cotton wool with a drop of lavender oil comforting.

Poor kid, I had constantly recurring ear infections as a child and it was miserable. In the end I had grommets, and tonsils and adenoids removed and have only had a couple of minor ear infections since. I was about 7 or 8 when I had it done and can clearly remember the difference of before and after the op.

I would definitely go private if you are in a position to do so, and tell everyone to piss off with their opinions too!

@stickyparrots I'll follow GP's advice and also I'll ask about vitamin D. Must of us a low on it and it helps fight infection.
You two most be so tired.

My DD has had major issues with glue ear and subsequent ear infections on and off the the last year. I feel your pain, I'm sick to death of being told I'm either being OTT going to doctors or not doing enough. You just can't win!

Also I second @PlainSpeakingStraightTalking . Oral antibiotics don't touch it apparently. We were given ear/eye drops to put in her ears. This makes you feel so helpless as they don't seem to do much when it's really nasty.

BarrytheKestrel, I had the same operation 30 years ago. It genuinely changed my life. I could eat and sleep properly. I went from being off the chart tiny to about average height, and I stopped being ill all the time.

I hope the operation works just as brilliantly for your DD. From what I remember, it meant a few uncomfortable days straight after the operation, and then everything was just so much better. I can still remember how happy and well I felt afterwards.
