I just don't get it. How is WhatsApp or messenger more convenient that email/text? Am I being a luddite?

I've never got on board with Facebook or the newer ways of managing electronic communication.

I email photos to family and use text messages. If I need an instant response I call.

Just interested.

Gwenhwyfar · 20/01/2019 13:27

"Doesn't work with public wifi because of the encryption

Of course it does!"

Maybe public wifi is not the right terminology. Maybe open wifi? I can assure you that the wifi in many cafes is not compatible with Whatsapp because of the encryption. I get this message quite often when trying to connect.

Gwenhwyfar · 20/01/2019 13:28

Quite a rude question in this context isn't it? I presume you're trying to show that I'm a digital dinosaur.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 20/01/2019 13:30

Blimey. Overreaction? Just a simple question. Calm down.

Wordthe · 20/01/2019 13:40

I use WhatsApp on my desktop and on my phone, I wish I could get it on my tablet as well!

Alwayscheerful · 20/01/2019 13:41

Whats app means you can send multiple photos at no cost to the person receiving them.
Sharing location and maps is free and sharing live location is free too. (Use the plus + symbol).
I like to see if a message has been received and then read and what time.
You can disable the message read ticks if you don't like it.
What's app means the things that are Free with an iPhone are free for everyone else.
Great app.

Alwayscheerful · 20/01/2019 13:43

Yes you can get an app for your iPad but your phone needs to be switched on for it to work and you need to scan something from your phone to your iPad to set the app up.

Wordthe · 20/01/2019 14:01

I don't think there's a WhatsApp app for an Android tablet though is there?

OutPinked · 20/01/2019 14:30

I only really use email for work. I don’t agree with students texting their tutors, it doesn’t sit right with me whatsoever.

For personal use I use WhatsApp to send my Mother photos of the DC. It’s instantaneous for starters and I can see that she has received them and they haven’t slipped into her junk mail. Also it’s a lot quicker than attaching 100 photos to an email.

I don’t use Facebook.

VanGoghsDog · 20/01/2019 16:01

My mum uses WhatsApp web on her Android tablet. There's bound to be an app.

3out · 20/01/2019 16:23

I can’t figure out how to get WhatsApp on to my iPad. Can someone give me an idiots guide, please? :)

Ragwort · 20/01/2019 17:23

Thanks to those who explained WhatsApp to me.

As a separate comment, I think there could be a market for technical people to offer tuition for non technical people, in a really clear way. I have tried to get help from the Apple store but maybe I was just unlucky as the people there seemed all very geeky & just couldn’t explain things in an idiot proof way. Equally I’ve tried a course at the library but that was a bit too basic.

Wordthe · 20/01/2019 17:36

My mum uses WhatsApp web on her Android tablet

she's much smarter than me then @VanGoghsDog:o
there seem to be hacks that can be used but I've not found a straightforward way!

VanGoghsDog · 20/01/2019 18:20

@Wordthe

Blimey, she's not IT smart at all, I set it up for her, it's really easy!

Just set it up here: web.whatsapp.com/

Same for iPad. It's via the web, rather than an app. There is WhatsApp desktop, no idea if that works for Android tablets or iPad. I use it all the time on my laptop though.

DonCorleoneTheThird · 20/01/2019 18:33

there are free courses offered at my local library, and I know some people who have set up a part-time business doing exactly that!

Handprints2018 · 20/01/2019 18:42

I like text. Email is only for work for me. Watsapp for everything else. I did use viber for a while first but the phone line was awful. I occasionally use my own data and only once, when on a very busy train with terrible Wi-Fi, could i not use it on Wi-Fi . Ive not had issues with open access except when its been poor strength.

I have set my options tight though. I have a friend who would send dozens of photos at once so i set to only d/l on home/publicWi-Fi if i chose too. And i turned off the ticks and last seen.

I like it for group organising. I did try fb messenger but never got into it as i dislike fb anyway and you can see when someone's seen a message. Which is great, unless you know someone who gets clingy if you don't respond within an hour of seeing it.

Handprints2018 · 20/01/2019 18:44

Ragwort have you tried YouTube? Ive found tutorials for a few applications there.

AuntieOxident · 20/01/2019 18:48

I use WhatsApp for arrangements, (where are you? Five minutes away) sort of thing, quick exchanges of info. etc.
I send long messages of greetings and news to friends and family via email, for me it’s useful in lieu of letters. Especially at Christmas and birthdays.
But mostly I speak on the actual dog and bone.

CookPassBabtridge · 20/01/2019 20:01

Whatsapp and messenger just feel more.. alive. You can see what people are active, share photos easily.. it feels like a chat. You can see when people are typing and just feels more instant and interactive.

Neverunderfed · 20/01/2019 20:17

Its a totally different media IMO. WhatsApp is just like text messaging, whereas email is like a letter, for something longer.

I use both, but for different things

Gwenhwyfar · 20/01/2019 23:21

"I use WhatsApp for arrangements, (where are you? Five minutes away) sort of thing, quick exchanges of info. etc."

People have tried to use it like that with me, but it doesn't work as I don't have Internet when I'm out and about. I wish they'd use text for this kind of thing where you need an instant answer and you're not at home/work.

VanGoghsDog · 20/01/2019 23:43

Why don't you get a package with data then, it's not expensive any more?

Gwenhwyfar · 20/01/2019 23:47

I don't want to VanGoghs. I'd rather people texted me for that kind of thing.

AGHHHH · 20/01/2019 23:56

I rarely email people for a chat. Social media is easier and faster. I love email though and still use it regularly for anythings that's a to do.

AGHHHH · 20/01/2019 23:57

Anything that's a 'to do'. Emailing companies and arranging appointments etc.
